If you’re wondering where to travel in January 2027, pick João Pessoa for a beach with an easy urban base; Buenos Aires if you’re after a city break with the cheapest lodging among those we priced; and Santiago if dry summer weather is your priority. Maceió combines a waterfront with coastal day trips, while Florianópolis suits those who prefer several beaches and don’t mind planning each day around rain and traffic. We compared seven nights, January 9 to 16, in Brazil and abroad.

If you want a beach, compare João Pessoa and Maceió first. If flights are pricey and you can drive to the Santa Catarina coast, Florianópolis gains ground. To trade sand for neighborhoods, cafés and museums, choose Buenos Aires; for summer days with little historical rain, Santiago.

Which dates to choose in January?
Use a week after New Year’s as your starting point: January 9–16 lets you compare all five cities over the same length of stay. If you’re flexible, it’s also worth simulating a week at the end of the month, keeping the same room and occupancy. In January, nightly rates are already high season all along the coast; the second half of the month usually has more availability than the week right after New Year’s Eve.
If your trip starts on New Year’s Eve
Separate the cost of the celebration from the rest of your vacation. The dinner, the party and minimum-night packages all change the math, and the January 9–16 prices don’t represent stays starting on 12/31. First decide whether you want to join the festivities; then compare one continuous booking against two separate stays, including the cost and hassle of switching hotels.

João Pessoa: beach and a walkable routine
João Pessoa is the simplest choice for combining beach, meals and hotel in one urban area. Tambaú and Cabo Branco let you spend the day along the waterfront; the historic center works as a change of scenery. Before paying for a distant location, check whether the cheaper room makes up for the daily commutes.
INMET reports a January normal of 86.4 mm of rain, with average lows of 25.1°C and highs of 30.9°C. That favors a beach trip, with an indoor plan for a rainy day. To organize your visits without repeating similar outings, use the guide to João Pessoa between beaches and history.

A base for alternating beach and history
Set aside free beach days before filling the week with excursions. A city tour helps you get to know the center and makes the other days less dependent on the road. If you want the southern coast or natural pools, check the duration, meeting point and conditions of the tour; for sea outings, the tide factors into your date choice.
Maceió: waterfront and beach tours
Choose Maceió if the idea is to sleep at a waterfront base and set aside a few days for beaches outside the city. Pajuçara suits those who want restaurants, hotel and tours in the same area. Praia do Francês, Gunga and the northern coast are choices for different days, avoiding a whole week of early departures and late returns.
The INMET January normal for Maceió is 91.2 mm of rain and an average high of 31°C. The difference from João Pessoa is small if you’re deciding on climate alone. What matters more is the flight available from your city, the hotel’s location and which tours you want to do. Check out the beaches of Maceió, Francês and Gunga to pick your stretch of coast.

Natural pools require checking the tide for your chosen date. Don’t book your whole itinerary around the first free day: leave room to fit in the sea tour and use the rest for the urban beach or land-based attractions. A hotel with breakfast makes early starts easier, but the price should include the meal in your comparison. Another beach option in the Northeast in January is Bahia: see Boipeba or Morro de São Paulo to decide between party and quiet.
Florianópolis: beaches with a careful choice of base
Florianópolis is worth it for those who like trying different beaches, as long as you pick one region to sleep in. A room downtown and another in Ingleses make for two very different trips. The first better serves urban commitments and access to the mainland; the second shortens the distance to the northern beach. Your choice of region changes the rhythm of your stay.
The ClimatView from the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) shows a January normal of 25.3°C average temperature and 239.2 mm of rain. It’s a summer alternative with more historical rain than João Pessoa or Maceió. Plan one day of urban activities and focus on the beaches near your lodging. The five-day Florianópolis itinerary helps you choose your region.
Which base to choose on the island?
Among those priced, the Cecomtur downtown came in below the Tatuíra guesthouse in Ingleses. That doesn’t automatically make downtown the best base for a beach vacation: transport, parking and time spent crossing the island all count. If you’re going without a car, first compare the actual walk between your room, the beach and the places you plan to eat.
Tip: in Florianópolis, compare the region before the nightly rate: we priced a hotel downtown and a guesthouse in Ingleses. See hotels in Florianópolis for Jan 9–16.
Buenos Aires: an urban summer vacation
Buenos Aires is the choice for spending less on your room and devoting the week to neighborhoods, museums and meals. Both hotels we priced are in the Congreso area, and breakfast wasn’t included. If you value Palermo or Recoleta, it’s worth redoing the search in those neighborhoods before treating the lowest price as your final budget.
Across the Río de la Plata, Uruguay is also in high season: prices for Punta del Este, Montevideo and Colonia are in the guide to Uruguay in January.
January is summer in Argentina too. The JMA normal for Buenos Aires Observatorio records an average of 24.9°C and 153.1 mm of rain. Plan your walks for the morning or late in the day and save indoor activities for the hot or rainy hours. Go deeper with the five-day Buenos Aires itinerary, without having to switch hotels for every neighborhood. Departing from Recife, Natal, Maceió or Porto Seguro, check the direct flights from the Northeast to Buenos Aires this summer.

A week gives you room to explore the city with breaks and add one extra activity. The Congreso area is a good base for an urban trip. If you’d rather spend most of your time in Palermo or Recoleta, compare lodging in those neighborhoods and how easily you can reach your chosen tours.
Santiago: dry summer and morning outings
Santiago is the strongest choice for those who prioritize little historical rain and want to combine the city with wineries or the coast. January is summer, so your plans should start with urban tours, parks and excursions available in that season. For snow and skiing, you’ll need to pick a different month.
If the idea is to travel around the country, the guide to Chile in January compares Santiago in the heat, the Atacama with its highland rains and Patagonia at its peak.
The Dirección Meteorológica de Chile, Pudahuel station records a January rain normal of just 0.3 mm (1991–2020). Outdoor outings in the morning leave room for a break during the hottest hours. Use the guide to Santiago by neighborhood and winery and, if you want a trip to the coast, the help of Viña del Mar from Santiago.

Among the hotels we priced, Reyall and Eurotel Providencia include breakfast and free cancellation. At Reyall, the Chilean VAT exemption for foreign tourists requires payment in dollars and presentation of your entry documents for Chile; check the rule for your rate. For Chile and Argentina, Brazilians can travel with just a valid RG (ID card) in good condition (a driver’s license doesn’t count); check the requirements on the Itamaraty portal. For a week, decide which days will be in the city before adding long excursions back to back.
How much does seven nights cost?
The hotels we priced range from R$ 1,762 to R$ 6,091 per room for seven nights, for two adults. All the prices below were quoted on 10/01/2026 on Booking, with check-in on 01/09 and check-out on 01/16/2027, in a standard double room. We included the displayed taxes; these are selected hotels, and the range shouldn’t be treated as a city average.

The lowest Maceió rate is for a hotel outside the central waterfront. In Florianópolis, the range mixes downtown and beach, keeping the same room category. These differences are flagged so the comparison stays useful: if your goal is to walk to the beach, redo the search only in your desired area and include breakfast, cancellation and taxes in the same total.

How to compare the full budget?
Add the flight or the drive to the hotel before choosing your destination. For a couple, divide the room total by two only after adding transport, meals and activities. An expensive flight can wipe out Buenos Aires’ advantage; a road trip with an overnight stop along the way can cost more than the seemingly budget-friendly room in Brazil.
Use the same dates and the same baggage when comparing flights. Also check the times: a late-night arrival followed by an early departure cuts into your usable days, even though the booking still charges for seven nights. Transfers, car rental, fuel and parking should reflect your chosen base, without renting a car for the whole week when your urban outings are doable on foot or by public transit.
Abroad, budget for insurance and a phone plan according to your itinerary. In Santiago and Buenos Aires, choose a hotel near the activities you plan to do, rather than paying just for the view or the lowest price. If you need to arrive late, confirm reception and transport for the first leg; your arrival plan should fit the actual flight time.
Beach or city: how to fill the week?
For seven nights at the beach, leave at least a few days without a booked tour. João Pessoa and Maceió let you alternate the waterfront, a historical or urban outing and an excursion outside your base. Booking outings every single day turns a relaxing vacation into a string of schedules; pick the two activities that matter most to you. If your family prefers a thermal pool to the beach, see which water park to choose in Caldas Novas.
In Florianópolis, focus your first days on one region and adjust your plans to the weather. The decision is between seeing many beaches with lots of driving or enjoying a few at a calmer pace. If you’re traveling with kids or have little tolerance for traffic, the second option is usually easier to organize.
In Buenos Aires, spread the week across neighborhoods, leaving one indoor activity for each longer day. Santiago combines urban days with a trip to a winery or the coast; putting two long excursions on back-to-back days can take away the flexibility that justifies a week-long stay. Save one day to repeat whatever you enjoyed most, with nothing already paid for.
If you need to choose right now, start with access: with a viable flight, João Pessoa delivers beach with an urban base; Buenos Aires serves a cultural vacation with the cheapest room among those priced; Santiago meets the priority of little rain. Then set a lodging cap and search within the region where you plan to spend your days. That order keeps your booking tied to the trip you actually want to take.
