Free New Year’s Eve in Amsterdam: Electric Fireworks at Museumplein
You can ring in the new year in Amsterdam without paying a thing: the City of Amsterdam organizes Electric Fireworks at Museumplein, the museum square, with free entry, a stage, a light show and the biggest countdown in the country.
For the 2027 celebration, the Winter Festival Amsterdam calendar already lists the December 31, 2026 party with free access and a countdown starting at 11:55pm, but the City hasn’t published the full program yet (Winter Festival Amsterdam, checked on 10/10/2026). Announced
At the last celebration, the program had two parts, according to the official tourism portal I amsterdam: Electric Fireworks Junior at 7pm, made for kids who can’t stay up until midnight, and the main show, with live acts on stage from 11pm and the countdown starting at 11:50pm. 2025/26 edition

Museumplein sits in the Oud Zuid neighborhood, about 2 km south of Centraal Station, between the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and the Concertgebouw concert hall. The structure described at the last edition was 60 meters wide and 30 meters tall, covered in light panels, with the countdown clock on top, which guarantees a good view from almost every edge of the square (Amsterdamlokaal, 08/26/2026). Space is limited: the Winter Festival recommends arriving early.
Where to watch the fireworks in Amsterdam beyond Museumplein
At the 2025/26 celebration there were free professional shows at three more spots, all over water: the Sloterplas, a lake in the west of the city (about 10 minutes, with the best view near the De Meervaart theater), IJburg, a new neighborhood in the east on the shore of Lake IJmeer (about 15 minutes, view from Bert Haanstrakade), and Weesp, a historic town annexed to Amsterdam, over the Vecht river (about 15 minutes). The City confirms each year’s shows in the fall; this list is from the previous edition (Amsterdamlokaal).
Can you set off fireworks in Amsterdam? The 2026/27 rules
No. Since August 1, 2026, buying, storing and setting off fireworks has been banned for the public across the entire Netherlands, and the 2026/27 celebration is the first under the new law, according to the Dutch government (Rijksoverheid, 07/01/2026). Rockets, batteries and firecrackers in categories F2, F3 and F4 can only be used by licensed professionals.
What’s still allowed is category F1 fireworks, the weakest kind: sparklers, snap-its and small cake fountains. The City can authorize shows by associations and foundations on New Year’s Eve, and that’s how the spectacles at Museumplein and the other spots exist (Rijksoverheid fireworks rules). The Winter Festival warns that anyone setting off banned fireworks can be fined.
For tourists, the change is big: until the 2025/26 celebration, Amsterdam was famous for skies filled with rockets set off by residents on every corner, which also filled hospitals with burn victims. Anyone who’s seen old videos should expect a more organized night, with the official shows concentrating the spectacle. Sky lanterns are also not recommended by the fire department and depend on municipal rules.
Paid parties on New Year’s Eve in Amsterdam: clubs, hotels and boats on the canals
If you want to keep dancing after midnight, there are ticketed parties already on sale for December 31, 2026, from €25 in the early-bird batch, in warehouses, clubs and hotels.
The Amsterdam NYE box office, run by the group that produces the parties, lists H7 Warehouse, Q-Factory, Crowne Plaza Amsterdam South and the Park Inn rooftop with a December 31, 2026 date, and tickets from €25 (Oct 2026). On sale for 2027 Bigger packages include a three-course dinner, VIP area or table with a bottle; the price goes up with each batch.

New Year’s Eve boat on the canals: how it works
A boat on the canals at midnight is what many people dream of, but availability is short. On December 31, the Amsterdam Light Festival cruises, a festival of light artworks spread along the canals, only run until 9pm, and the Museumplein ice rink also closes at 9pm (Winter Festival). The simplest approach is to do the boat in the late afternoon and then walk to Museumplein.
Private boats and dinner cruises at midnight usually open bookings between September and October and sell out early. With no published price for 2026 on the pages we checked, the reference is Civitatis’s evening cruise with cheese and wine, which starts at R$ 209 per person on regular dates (Oct 2026); check whether there’s a December 31 departure before booking. For those who prefer to eat on land, Supperclub, a restaurant with a show and club, sells its New Year’s dinner through the same Winter Festival storefront.

How to get back after midnight in Amsterdam
Getting back is the biggest practical risk of New Year’s Eve in Amsterdam, because public transport stops early in the evening. At the last celebration, trains, metro, trams and buses made their last runs around 8pm, and Amsterdam Centraal station was closed from 8pm to 1am, according to I amsterdam.
From 1:30am, night buses (Nachtnet) left from the platform on the IJ river side, behind Centraal, and some metro lines started running again. NS night trains connected Amsterdam to Schiphol, Utrecht, Leiden, The Hague and Rotterdam, and the regular Sunday and holiday schedule began at 7am on January 1. The free GVB ferries to Amsterdam-Noord and NDSM kept running on a reduced schedule.
Taxis and ride-hailing apps exist, but demand spikes between midnight and 2am and the streets in the Center fill with people on foot. The plan that works is to sleep within walking distance of the party: from Museumplein to Dam Square, in the heart of the Center, it’s about 2.5 km, roughly 30 minutes on foot. Those staying in Noord depend on the ferry or a long way back.

How much does New Year’s Eve in Amsterdam cost?
Watching the party at Museumplein costs nothing; the expense comes from the hotel, which at New Year’s runs over R$ 2,800 for three nights for a couple even at the simplest well-rated places, plus the flight. With three nights from December 30 to January 2, staying in Amsterdam comes to between R$ 2,849 and R$ 5,328 for a couple (Booking and Civitatis, Oct 2026).
The scenarios below add up hotel, celebration and the way back on the night of December 31. The flight from Brazil is left out because it depends on your departure city, but it’s usually the biggest cost of the trip: compare at the end of the section. Euro tickets were converted at €1 = R$ 5.61 (ECB rate of 10/09/2026).

New Year’s Eve pitfalls in Amsterdam: what nobody tells you
The night in Amsterdam has traps tourists only discover on the spot, almost all tied to transport and the new fireworks law. The main ones:
- Transport stops at 8pm: a 9pm dinner booked far from the hotel turns into a long walk; book near where you’re sleeping.
- Centraal closed from 8pm to 1am at the last celebration: don’t plan meetups or train arrivals for that window.
- Fireworks bought in Belgium or Germany are still banned in the Netherlands; don’t bring them in your luggage.
- Party tickets from resellers: buy from the official box office; see the most common New Year’s scams.
- Congested cell service at midnight at Museumplein: agree on a fixed meeting point.
- Bicycles: bike lanes stay busy at night; look before crossing.
- Emergency: the European number is 112.
Weather in Amsterdam at New Year’s: what to wear
December in Amsterdam is cold, damp and dark: the average high is 6.9 °C and the low is 1.5 °C, with rain on about 14 days of the month and only 58 hours of sunshine for the entire month, according to the 1991-2020 normals from the Dutch meteorological institute for Schiphol (KNMI). The sun sets before 5pm.
To stand in the square for two or three hours, wear a waterproof coat with a hood, a thermal layer underneath, a hat, gloves and boots that handle wet ground; an umbrella gets in the way of the people behind you. The white outfit of Brazilian New Year’s goes under the coat; the 2027 New Year’s color guide helps you choose. To compare with other cold celebrations, see New Year’s in the snow and cold.

What’s open in Amsterdam on January 1
January 1, 2027 is a Friday and a public holiday, and many museums open later or stay closed. According to the Winter Festival table checked on 10/02/2026, the Rijksmuseum is open 9am to 5pm on December 31 and January 1, the Stedelijk 10am to 6pm both days, and ARTIS zoo 10am to 5pm on January 1 (Winter Festival).
Closed on January 1 are the Maritime Museum (Het Scheepvaartmuseum), the Wereldmuseum and the Amsterdam Dungeon. The Van Gogh Museum is open 9am to 5pm on December 31 and hasn’t yet published its January 1 hours; the Heineken Experience closes early on December 31, at 4pm. Supermarkets and shops open less; do your shopping on the morning of the 31st. On January 1, transport follows the Sunday schedule.
After the long night, January 1 calls for a light plan: a canal boat ride, a museum with a timed ticket or a day trip to the windmills on the 2nd. The tours below are from Civitatis; check whether they run on January 1 before booking.

New Year’s Eve in Amsterdam with kids and accessibility
Amsterdam has a rare advantage for those traveling with children: the Electric Fireworks Junior, at 7 pm at Museumplein, was created for those who can’t stay up until midnight. At the last edition, host Edson da Graça led the kids through a game to “crack the code” that unlocks a short show of light and eco-friendly fireworks (Amsterdamlokaal).
With a small child, go to the 7 pm show, have an early dinner and head back before the square fills up for the main show, which starts letting the public in around 10 pm. Bring kids’ ear protection and extra cold-weather gear: the wind makes it feel much colder. The new fireworks law helps, because the city is far quieter outside the official spots. More ideas in the guide to New Year’s Eve abroad with kids.
For accessibility, Museumplein is a flat, grassy square with no steps, but it gets packed and the grass and dirt ground can turn to mud in the rain. The organizers haven’t yet announced a reserved wheelchair area for 2027. Since transit stops at 8 pm, those with reduced mobility should stay in Oud Zuid, a few blocks from the square, or book an accessible taxi in advance; the streets in the Center have cobblestones and arched bridges.
How to get to Amsterdam: flights, Schiphol and entering Europe
Flights from Brazil land at Schiphol Airport (AMS), about 15 km from the center, with a direct train to Amsterdam Centraal. Arrive by the 30th: on 12/31 the trains stop around 8 pm and Centraal closes at night.
A stress-free arrival for the big night
- Flight: compare cash and miles fares to Schiphol on FlipMilhas, with departure by the 29th or 30th.
- Transfer: Civitatis sells a private transfer from Schiphol to your hotel: $400.59 each way in a 3-seat car (price per vehicle, Oct/2026).
- Insurance: for Brazilians in Europe, insurance can be requested at immigration and private hospitals are expensive. Use the minimum Schengen coverage of €30,000 as a reference; compare on Seguros Promo.
Brazilians don’t need a visa for the Netherlands on tourist trips of up to 90 days in the Schengen Area. Since April 2026, EES registers fingerprints and a photo on entry to the Schengen Area; ETIAS, the €20 online authorization, is expected by the EU to launch at the end of 2026 (official ETIAS website). Where to stay for New Year’s Eve in Amsterdam 2027: Oud Zuid, Center or Noord?
To see the party and walk back, the best neighborhood is Oud Zuid, around Museumplein. The Center, with the canals and Dam Square, is a 30-minute walk from the square and close to Centraal, where the night buses leave from; it’s the choice for those going to paid parties. Noord, across the IJ river, is cheaper but depends on the free ferry.
The hotels below are rated 8.4 or higher with more than a thousand reviews on Booking, checked on 10/10/2026. The ones in the Center sell out weeks before the big night; go for a rate with free cancellation. If the Center is pricey, the Red Light District guide helps you decide whether it’s worth staying there.

Other New Year’s Eve celebrations in Europe
If Amsterdam doesn’t add up for you, the general New Year’s Eve 2027 guide gathers destinations in Brazil, abroad and by cruise. In Europe, compare with New Year’s Eve in Paris, with the Arc de Triomphe show and dinners on the Seine, and with New Year’s Eve in Berlin, which has a party at the Brandenburg Gate; both are just a few hours by train from Amsterdam. For another winter celebration, see New Year’s Eve in Prague.
Is it worth spending New Year’s Eve in Amsterdam?
It’s worth it for anyone who wants a European winter celebration with a free, well-organized party, without the rocket wars of the past, and for those who love a warehouse club night.
