There is no official color for New Year’s Eve 2027. White is the most traditional choice for the turn of the year in Brazil, and the rest are popular meanings that shift by region, religion and family. Your outfit, though, depends on the destination’s weather; the table below uses INMET data.
The color of New Year’s Eve 2027 is a personal choice: white for peace, yellow or gold for prosperity, green for hope, and so on — always as tradition. For your outfit, think about the weather: light fabric in Fortaleza, Recife, Salvador and Rio; a sweater and rain jacket in Serra Gaúcha; an extra layer in Campos do Jordão.

What does each color mean in tradition?
The interpretations below appear in similar form across the Brazilian press, but they vary between religious traditions, regions and families (Correio Braziliense, 12/19/2025; Diario de Pernambuco, Dec/2025). Use them as inspiration, not as a promise.
- White: peace, purity and renewal; the most traditional color for the turn of the year.
- Yellow or gold: money, prosperity and material success.
- Green: health, hope and balance.
- Red: passion, desire and energy.
- Pink: romantic love, tenderness and affection.
- Blue: calm and serenity.
- Purple or lilac: spirituality and self-knowledge.
- Orange: creativity and enthusiasm.
- Silver: new beginnings and change.
Where does white come from? According to anthropologist Marilu Campelo of UFPA, the habit comes from umbanda: offerings to Iemanjá on the beaches of Rio and Santos. The article also notes that black is often avoided because it evokes mourning, and that in Curitiba many people steer clear of red (UFPA).
Psychologist Adelma Pimentel, also from UFPA, points out that the meaning of colors changes across cultures and eras.
There is no basis for claiming that the color of your clothes changes health, money or love. It’s custom: pick the meaning that speaks to you or, simply, whatever is comfortable. If you want to mix tones, pair a white piece with a colorful accessory.
December weather in each destination
The averages below come from INMET’s Climatological Normals (1981–2010) for December. The minimum shows what the night feels like, which is when you’re out on the street. A specific December can stray from the average.
| Destination (INMET station) | Average low and high | December rainfall |
|---|---|---|
| Fortaleza | 24.9 to 31.5 °C | 43.5 mm; 6 rainy days |
| Recife (reference for Porto de Galinhas) | 22.9 to 30.5 °C | 55.3 mm; 7 days |
| Salvador | 23.6 to 30.5 °C | 58.1 mm; 6 days |
| Rio de Janeiro | 23.2 to 30.3 °C | no data in the rainfall table |
| Florianópolis | 20.3 to 28.0 °C | 172.5 mm; 12 days |
| Santos (cruise embarkation) | 21.7 to 27.9 °C | 181.1 mm; 13 days |
| Caxias do Sul (reference for Gramado and Canela) | 16.0 to 25.9 °C | 140.5 mm; 11 days |
| Campos do Jordão | 13.1 to 22.0 °C | 240.0 mm; 19 days |
Quick read: on the Northeast coast, nights sit between 23 and 25 °C and it rains little; in Rio the night is also warm, but summer downpours are common. In Florianópolis, the mountains and Santos, it rains on 11 to 19 days of the month. In Campos do Jordão, the average low is 13.1 °C: bring an extra layer. (Rainy day: 1 mm or more.)
Rio de Janeiro: white and Copacabana
In Rio, wearing white is the strongest custom of the turn of the year. Our Rio New Year’s Eve guide says the Copacabana and Hilton parties call for white with smart-casual flair, and that the celebration tends to be hot and humid, with a chance of downpours. On the sand, light clothing, closed sandals and a packable rain jacket do the trick.

For white clothing, test for transparency in daylight and choose underwear that doesn’t show through. A small crossbody bag keeps your hands free in the crowd; bring only your ID, phone and a payment method. Check the official party website for any restrictions on backpacks or umbrellas.
Northeast: heat, humidity and passing showers
Fortaleza, Recife, Salvador and Porto de Galinhas have December nights of 23 to 25 °C, according to INMET. Our guides describe a hot, humid celebration with quick showers (Fortaleza, Recife, Salvador and Porto de Galinhas). Prioritize light, breathable fabric, sunscreen and shoes that work on sand and pavement.
A compact rain jacket keeps you from depending on an umbrella in the middle of the crowd. Avoid breaking in tight shoes: the walk to the party and the trip back after midnight are usually on foot.
The mountains: cooler nights and rain
December in the mountains isn’t seriously cold, but the nights are cooler. In Campos do Jordão, the average low is 13.1 °C and it rains on 19 days of the month. In Caxias do Sul, the low is 16.0 °C. Our Canela guide suggests a light sweater and rain jacket, with a light coat over the white.
A light layer on top, comfortable pants and closed shoes with grippy soles make an easy base to adapt. For dinner or a hotel party, check the dress code on the invitation. Also check Campos do Jordão and Gramado before you pack.
Cruise: Santos and the MSC Divina
Réveillon em Alto Mar (New Year’s Eve at Sea) departs from Santos, and the itinerary is set close to embarkation. The event’s official FAQ doesn’t publish a dress code, so check the guidance in your booking; our MSC Divina guide suggests light beachwear for the days and at least one dressier outfit for the gala dinner.
The official FAQ lists prohibited items on board, including drinks, hair dryers, flat irons and curling wands, and embarkation in Santos is on 12/29/2026 with disembarkation on 01/02/2027 (reveillonemaltomar.com.br/faq). Choose shoes with soles that don’t slip on the decks and bring a thin layer for air-conditioned areas.
New Year’s Eve in the cold abroad
For winter destinations like Paris and Berlin, the U.S. weather service’s guidance is to dress in layers and cover exposed skin (National Weather Service). In practice: a base layer, an insulating layer and an outer layer against wind and moisture, proper socks and closed shoes with grip.
We don’t use temperature figures for destinations abroad because they depend on the city and the year. Check the week’s forecast and local advisories before you pack, and check each city’s guide for the party’s safety rules.
Practical checklist before you head out
- Check the updated forecast for the place and time of the party.
- Choose shoes that work on the way there, not just with the look.
- Bring a small bag with your ID, phone and payment method.
- Check the official party website for entry rules.
- On a cruise, read your booking’s guidance on dress code and prohibited items.
- Abroad, think layers, wind and a safe trip back.
