New Year’s Eve in Prague combines Old Town, strolls along the Vltava and ticketed parties. For the countdown from December 31, 2026 to January 1, 2027, Medusa and a river cruise already have announced editions. Pick a hotel near your plans and check the fireworks restrictions downtown.

The decision that makes the night easiest is staying on the same side of the river as your plans. A party in Old Town calls for a base in Staré Město, Josefov or the edge of Nové Město. Malá Strana and Kampa make more sense if you want to end the night on the west side. Check Prague hotels for 12/30 to 01/02 before choosing your ticket.

| Decision | What to consider |

Where to spend the countdown: Old Town and the river
Old Town Square is the pick for anyone who wants to start the evening among historic facades, Christmas lights and market stalls. It’s a public space; walking around the square doesn’t require a party ticket. Food, drinks, restaurants and ticketed attractions are separate expenses. Plan dinner before heading out, especially if you haven’t booked a New Year’s meal.
Organizer Taiko announces the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square markets from November 28, 2026 to January 6, 2027, 10 am to 10 pm. That schedule lets you include the stalls early in the evening, but it doesn’t guarantee service at midnight or a countdown with a stage.
The markets announced for the 2026/2027 season run from 10 am to 10 pm at Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square.

The Vltava River offers a different kind of evening: watching the illuminated bridges and strolling the banks. Choose a stretch near your hotel, keep an alternative exit in mind and avoid depending on crossing Charles Bridge at the moment everyone wants to be on it. The bridge is a great backdrop for a walk, but its location doesn’t guarantee a view of authorized fireworks.
For 2026/2027, no confirmation of a municipal show or public fireworks display was found in the official channels consulted. The square’s programming, possible closures and special traffic measures remain pending. Check the official Prague tourism site and the city hall close to your trip. In the meantime, build your night around a stroll and a booking with clear terms.
Fireworks rules in central Prague
The rules changed in 2026. Municipal regulation 12/2026, in force since July 8, establishes a permanent ban in the districts listed in its annex, including Praha 1. Old Town, Josefov and Malá Strana fall within that area: the countdown does not suspend the ban on fireworks covered by the regulation.
In districts outside that annex there’s a time exception, from 5 pm on December 31 to 2 am on January 1. It does not open up the historic center and does not lift restrictions in other protected areas, such as rivers, islands and the 50-meter strip along the banks. Sky lanterns are also banned citywide. Don’t buy fireworks to set off in the square, on the bridge or by the river.
The regulation has specific exceptions for the F1 category and for authorized professional activities. Amendment 20/2026, in effect since September 29, also addresses certain silent T2 scenic effects, under conditions. These technical exceptions don’t mean any firework sold to tourists can be used downtown. If you want to use a product, check its category and the applicable rules directly with the local authority.
Private fireworks can happen even where their use is restricted; seeing them doesn’t prove authorization. For children, pets and noise-sensitive people, opt for an indoor booking and a short walk back, staying away from any launch you observe. Don’t let the hunt for a photo become a reason to linger in a crowded passageway.
Confirmed ticketed parties and cruise
Both organizers below have already published dates, times and prices for this New Year’s Eve. Choose first between dinner, dance floor and boat: the tickets offer different experiences and don’t include lodging.
| Program and edition | Time and ticket | Includes / note | Sleep nearby |
|---|---|---|---|
| Medusa — dinner and party Confirmed 2026/2027 | 12/31, from 6:30 pm CZK 5,990 per person | Buffet until 12:30 am, seat, welcome Prosecco and toast. DJs until 6 am. Melantrichova 5, Old Town. | |
| Medusa — party only Confirmed 2026/2027 | Entry from 11:30 pm CZK 1,500 per person | Prosecco toast; no food and no guaranteed seat. | |
| Cruise Prague — New Year’s Eve Cruise Confirmed 2026/2027 | 12/31, 8 pm → 1 am CZK 5,800 per adult | Classic River; boarding 7:15 pm at pier 17, Dvořákovo nábřeží. Buffet, welcome drink and sparkling wine for the toast; other drinks charged separately. |
Prices and conditions from the producers consulted in October 2026; charged in Czech korunas (CZK). Check the final amount on the official channel before paying.
Medusa’s late entry costs CZK 1,500 per person, from 11:30 pm, with no dinner and no guaranteed seat, in the 2026/2027 edition.
At Medusa, the announced dress code is smart casual. The producer allows refunds up to 96 hours before the event; after that, the ticket is non-refundable. Dinner and late entry are different options for the same night.
For the cruise, booking requires full prepayment. The buffet is all-you-can-eat; the current page doesn’t advertise an open bar. The boat’s position near Charles Bridge for the toast is part of the operator’s plan and may depend on navigation. There’s no guarantee of a municipal fireworks show. Match your pier departure with the route to your hotel, and confirm accessible boarding and children’s conditions directly before buying.
Where to stay for the walk back
Old Town is the most direct base for the square and Medusa. Josefov is on the same bank and also works for those boarding north of the center. The edge of New Town, near Národní třída, often lets you combine the old center and the National Theatre without crossing the Vltava. The exact address matters more than the “Prague 1” label, which covers areas on both sides of the river.

Malá Strana and Kampa offer another choice: sleep on the west side and keep your evening there. If your party is on the east bank, getting back means crossing the river. With cold, crowds and possible closures, don’t just count the minutes a map shows during the day. Test the route to your hotel door before December 31 and save an alternative route.

The scenarios combine rates actually shown for the same three nights and tickets published by the producers. The components in reais and in CZK are kept separate, with no currency conversion. That way, the total shows what you need to book in each currency. Food outside the ticket, airport transport, extra drinks, airfare and insurance aren’t included in the sum.

References from October 2026. The street scenario doesn’t include a New Year’s meal; the dance floor one also calls for a separate dinner. The boat one includes the announced buffet, but extra drinks are charged. In any scenario, the walk depends on your mobility and on what’s open to pedestrians that night.
Compare airfare to PRG on FlipMilhas before locking in non-refundable tickets: it can be a big part of the budget. The suggested search departs São Paulo on 12/29 and returns on 01/02; adjust origin and dates to arrive in time for check-in. For travel insurance on Seguros Promo, compare medical assistance, limits, exclusions and delay coverage, without assuming automatic coverage for winter activities.
Getting back and the airport
For the trip back after midnight, a hotel on the same bank lets you avoid connections. If you need transport, check the route in the PID Lítačka app on the day. PID’s regular night service runs roughly between midnight and 4:30 am: trams every 30 minutes, with a connection at Lazarská, and buses at 30- or 60-minute intervals. Regular fares apply, with no night surcharge.
That’s the regular network, not a confirmation of special service on 12/31/2026. The announcement of this year’s extra holiday schedules hasn’t been found yet; check the DPP close to your trip. Don’t plan your trip back assuming the metro runs until a time published for another year. Taxis or ride-hailing apps are an alternative, but price, wait time and pickup point will depend on conditions that night.
For reduced mobility, PID reports that night buses have low floors, while few night trams are accessible. Check the vehicle and stop for your intended route. On the historic streets, cobblestones, uneven surfaces and occasionally slippery pavement also deserve attention; confirm step-free access at both your hotel and the party.
| Arriving via the airport | Regular reference |
|---|---|
| Line 59 + Metro A | Connection at Nádraží Veleslavín; approximately 35 minutes to the center. |
| 90-minute ticket | 50 CZK on paper or 46 CZK in the app. |
| 72-hour pass | 350 CZK on paper or 340 CZK in the app. |
| Airport Express | 200 CZK; separate fare, not covered by regular tickets. |
| Airport at night | Lines 907 and 910; check the stop and schedule for your hotel address. |
Fares checked in October 2026 on the PID: airport and stations page. Validate your paper ticket when you start your journey and activate the digital one before boarding, keeping an eye on the deadline shown in the app. If you’d rather avoid connections with luggage, check out the airport transfer via Civitatis and confirm the price for your vehicle and group before booking.
What to do on January 1
The first day of the year is a national holiday in the Czech Republic. Plan an itinerary with few reservations and check each attraction: regular winter hours are not confirmation of holiday opening.
The Old Town and Wenceslas Square markets have an announced season running until January 6, with daily hours from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. The National Gallery Prague, meanwhile, reports closure on January 1, 2027; on December 31, it will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Don’t leave your gallery visit for the holiday.
There’s one cultural option with a confirmed edition: the New Year’s concert by the Prague Symphony Orchestra FOK, in the Smetana Hall of the Municipal House, on January 1, 2027, at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The program features Tchaikovsky. Check tickets and availability with the producer; no price was added to the budget without checking the box office.
The FOK New Year’s concert has performances at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on January 1, 2027, in the Smetana Hall of the Municipal House.
For a lighter day, take a short walk after coffee and keep one indoor stop you’ve already checked. Prague Castle publishes regular winter hours, but that doesn’t confirm every area is open on January 1. Check the specific calendar before buying a visit for that date; January 2 may be a simpler alternative for concentrating your booked tours.

Weather, clothing and a plan B
To prepare your clothing for the weather and have a plan B, think of a winter night: a proper coat, layers, gloves, a hat and shoes with good grip. By the river, waiting outdoors demands more protection than a short walk between hotel and restaurant. Snow isn’t guaranteed; check the forecast close to your trip and adapt your plan to rain, wind and street conditions.
A good solution is to limit outdoor time and have dinner or a party indoors. If you only buy standing-room tickets, you need to decide where to eat before 11:30 p.m. Families can enjoy the markets earlier and head back to the hotel before the biggest crowds. With reduced mobility, prefer an itinerary with few changes of surface and confirm accessible entry at each stop.
If the weather turns, don’t count on finding a table without a reservation or boarding a different boat than the one you bought. Keep the cancellation terms and the providers’ contact details handy. The minimum age and rules for minors weren’t made clear on the sales pages we checked for either program: get written confirmation before buying for children.
To keep the square, dinner and hotel on the east bank, compare the Leon D’Oro in the Old Town. To stay on the west side, choose Malá Strana and plan your evening there. The best base is the one whose route back you can actually manage in the night’s conditions.
How to organize your bookings
Choose your bank and hotel first, then confirm the party and how you’ll get back. Save the address, receipts and times on your phone, with offline access. During the week of your trip, review special transport, any closures and the forecast; on the 31st, double-check your boarding point or entrance door.

Questions about New Year’s Eve in Prague
Is there a confirmed fireworks show at Old Town Square for 2027?
As of our check on October 8, 2026, no official confirmation of a municipal fireworks display for this New Year’s Eve was found. The markets have an announced season, but operating until 10 p.m. doesn’t confirm a midnight event.
Does the cheapest Medusa ticket include dinner?
No. The 1,500 CZK ticket gives entry from 11:30 p.m., without food and without a guaranteed seat, with a Prosecco toast. Dinner with the party is a separate option, at 5,990 CZK, for the 2026/2027 edition.
Does the New Year’s Eve cruise have an open bar?
The official page for the December 31, 2026 edition advertises a buffet, a welcome drink and sparkling wine for the toast. Other drinks are charged. The adult ticket costs 5,800 CZK; check the updated terms before buying.
Is it better to stay in the Old Town or in Malá Strana?
The Old Town makes it easier to get back from the square and from Medusa along the east bank. Malá Strana is on the other side of the Vltava and pairs well with a program on the west side. Choose your hotel based on where your night is and your route back.
Can you travel with children or reduced mobility?
You’ll need to adapt the program. For minors, confirm admission and ticket rules with the producer. For reduced mobility, check access at the hotel, the party and the vehicle: few night trams are accessible, according to PID.
Which choice fits your trip?
For a night of square and strolling, prioritize the hotel and book where you’ll have dinner. For dancing, compare entry times and what the ticket includes. For dinner on the river, organize boarding and the walk after disembarking. In every case, leave the fireworks to authorized activities and follow the official announcements during the week of New Year’s Eve.
