What are the 2027 Pan American Games in Lima?

The Games bring together delegations from across the Americas in a wide range of sports and will feature 16 days of competition. The official program confirms 38 sports. The opening ceremony is set for July 23 at the Estadio Nacional; sporting events begin earlier, with baseball on July 21 and cricket on July 22. To choose your travel dates, check the schedule for each sport: you don’t need to stay in the city for the entire period if you’re only interested in a specific event.

How to get to Lima from Brazil

LATAM advertises direct flights between São Paulo/Guarulhos and Lima, with a flight time of approximately 5 hours. The airline reports daily service, but frequency and schedules may change. For an initial search, select July 23, 2027 as your departure date and August 8 or 9 as your return; if you’re going to a specific event, use the competition dates instead of the entire Games period. Compare prices on FlipMilhas or Google Flights for your travel dates and confirm conditions directly with the airline before booking.

Departing from another Brazilian city, compare connections to Lima and check whether the layover requires changing airports. Jorge Chávez International Airport receives the flights; plan your route to your accommodation based on your arrival time.

Don’t count on a special Games transport route without an announcement from the organizer. Plan each trip using the address of that day’s sports venue and check local transport options once the final schedule is available.

What to bring: documents, insurance, and eSIM

The Brazilian Embassy states that Brazilians can enter Peru with a valid, recent RG (Brazilian ID) with a photo that allows clear identification, or a valid passport. If using a passport, it must have more than six months of validity on the arrival date. A driver’s license does not replace a travel document. Check updated requirements with Peruvian authorities before boarding, especially if your trip includes a connection in another country.

Travel insurance should not be treated as an entry requirement for the Games; it’s a way to organize medical assistance and support in case of unforeseen events during your trip. Compare coverage, deductibles, and exclusions before purchasing. For internet, check whether your phone supports eSIM and compare available plans for Peru, or check your carrier’s roaming rates. Don’t buy a plan before confirming coverage and validity for your travel dates.

Since the schedule spans more than two weeks and venues vary, the most economical choice is usually to follow the events you want to see, buy flights for that window, and choose accommodation with viable access to the venues on that schedule. Also read the 3-day Lima itinerary to plan sightseeing outside the competitions and the list of international concerts in Brazil in 2027 to discover other events during the period, plus the New Year’s Eve guide to Lima for another time of year. If your trip continues through the country, check out the Ica and Nazca itinerary too.

Sightseeing between events

Between one competition and another, choose a tour that fits your time window. The full tour covers central attractions; the Museo Larco works well for those who want to dedicate their visit to pre-Columbian history.

Check the time and travel distance before booking, as traffic can shorten your window between events.

What Lima is like in July

July is winter in Lima. The Peruvian meteorological service records cloudy or overcast skies and garúa — a fine drizzle — during winter, without the heavy rain typical of other regions. Bring layers, a light waterproof jacket, and comfortable shoes; the weather can feel damp and cold even without downpours. Specific conditions for 2027 can only be checked close to your trip.

Watch out for the holiday: July 28 and 29 (Fiestas Patrias, Wednesday and Thursday) are national holidays in Peru and fall in the middle of the Games. Expect reduced hours at shops and attractions, more crowds, and fuller hotels on those days; book in advance.

Where to stay in Lima during the Games

Miraflores is the most practical choice for a first trip: it concentrates accommodation and services and has access to the Costa Verde. Barranco appeals to those who want to be near cultural spaces and restaurants; San Isidro has hotels and services with a more corporate profile. The official Perú Travel agency also highlights Miraflores and San Isidro among the capital’s hotel areas.

On Booking, for one night from July 23 to 24, 2027, for two adults, prices including taxes were: ibis budget Lima Miraflores at R$ 297, Viajero Lima – Barranco Hostel at R$ 354, and Pullman Lima San Isidro at R$ 554. Breakfast was included in the ibis rate; the other two rates did not indicate breakfast. These are prices for one night at the start of the Games, not an estimate for the full stay. See options on Booking for July 23–24; prices and availability may change.

Choose your neighborhood after checking the venues on your schedule: Miraflores prioritizes restaurants and variety, Barranco offers a cultural atmosphere, and San Isidro provides corporate services. The ceremony is at the Estadio Nacional, but events are spread across Lima. See hotels in Miraflores for the Games dates ›
