For anyone who wants to see two Northeast Brazilian capitals without changing hotels, the Virtuosa circuit gets it done in a week: the ship sleeps at sea between ports and arrives in each city in the morning. Those who live in the Northeast can flip the logic and board close to home, treating Santos and Búzios as ports of call.

Which Northeast Brazil cruises sail in the 2026/2027 season?

Two ships sail the Northeast this season. The MSC Virtuosa, making its Brazil debut, runs the same 7-night circuit every week from December to March; the Buenavista, from Spanish line Corazul, has four 7-night departures in January with an overnight in Salvador. The Virtuosa’s debut as the season’s largest ship was announced by MSC and reported by Mercado & Eventos.

The price in each row is the lowest of the season for that port, checked on Logitravel on 10/09 and 10/10/2026: R$ 4,024 on the Santos departure of 12/05/2026, R$ 5,114 on the Salvador departure of 03/09/2027 and R$ 4,454 on the Maceió departure of 12/09/2026. The Buenavista sails Rio, sea day, Salvador with overnight, sea day, Ilhabela and Santos, according to Corazul’s itinerary page (Oct 2026); Corazul doesn’t publish fares, and sales go through travel agencies. Details in the Corazul Buenavista guide.

Which port does the cruise leave from and how do you get to embarkation?

The Virtuosa boards at three ports on the same circuit: Santos on Saturdays, Salvador on Tuesdays and Maceió on Wednesdays, and you disembark at the same port you boarded, seven nights later. Pick the cheapest port to reach, not the itinerary: the ship and the ports of call are the same.

In Santos, embarkation is at the Concais terminal, in Ponta da Praia; those coming from São Paulo city drive down via the Imigrantes highway, and the step-by-step is in the cruise from Santos guide. In Salvador, the terminal is in Comércio, in the Lower City, one ride up the Elevador Lacerda from Pelourinho: see the cruise from Salvador guide. In Maceió, embarkation is at the Jaraguá port, near the Pajuçara waterfront, explained in the cruise from Maceió guide. Those living in Recife board in Maceió, about 260 km away via the BR-101, as shown in the cruise from Recife guide.

Arrive the day before if you’re relying on a flight: an airport delay won’t hold the ship. The boarding window comes in your e-ticket, and each port’s schedule can change from one departure to another.

How much does it cost and what’s included in the price?

The Northeast Brazil cruise costs from R$ 4,024 per person in an interior cabin on the Virtuosa, departing Santos, and balconies start at R$ 5,414 (Oct 2026). The price already includes full board, shows, port fees and the service charge; drinks, internet and shore excursions are paid separately.

What can you do at each port of call?

Each Virtuosa port of call is one day ashore, with the ship docked from morning to late afternoon; exact arrival and departure times come in your date’s itinerary and are subject to confirmation on your ticket. That’s enough time for one main outing per port, not two.

Port of callWhere the ship stopsWhat fits in the day
BúziosOffshore, with tender boat disembarkationOrla Bardot and Rua das Pedras on foot, or a schooner tour of the beaches
SalvadorTerminal in Comércio, Lower CityElevador Lacerda, Pelourinho and Mercado Modelo on foot; Farol da Barra by taxi
MaceióJaraguá portPajuçara and Ponta Verde waterfront; Pajuçara natural pools by jangada, if the tide cooperates
Santos (for those boarding in the Northeast)Concais, Ponta da PraiaWaterfront gardens, historic center and the Coffee Museum

Salvador: this is the port that delivers the most without a paid excursion. Mercado Modelo sits right across from the terminal and the Elevador Lacerda takes you up to the Upper City, where Pelourinho is. More itineraries in the what to do in Salvador guide.

Maceió: the Pajuçara natural pools depend on low tide; if the day’s tide doesn’t cooperate, the Ponta Verde waterfront is the plan B, just a few minutes away by taxi. Búzios: disembarkation is by tender boat, so the line to get off can eat up the first hour.

What cabin types are there and which one is worth it?

The interior is the cheapest and works for those who only sleep in the room; a balcony costs about R$ 1,400 more per person and is worth it for anyone who wants to watch the arrivals into Northeast Brazil’s ports without fighting for deck space. The ranges below are from the Santos departure of 12/05/2026 (Oct 2026).

CabinBest forFrom
InteriorThose who spend the day out of the roomR$ 4,024 (Oct 2026)

BalconyCouples and anyone who loves arriving in port watching the seaR$ 5,574 (Oct 2026)
Yacht ClubThose who want an exclusive area and butler serviceR$ 9,184 (Oct 2026)
Tip: balcony cabins are the first to sell out on December and January departures, and prices climb as the ship fills up; check MSC Virtuosa balconies.

What documents do I need to board?

Since the itinerary stays within Brazil, a valid original Brazilian ID, passport or driver’s license works, according to MSC’s documents page (Oct 2026). Minors under 18 traveling without both parents need a notarized authorization.

Also bring your e-ticket printed or on your phone, your luggage tag and the credit card that will be linked to your onboard account. The ship’s medical care is paid separately, and health insurance typically doesn’t cover the onboard medical center.

Tip: the ship’s medical center charges for every visit, and cancellation due to illness is only refunded with travel insurance that covers the trip; get a travel insurance quote before paying for your cabin.

Is it worth it? Who it’s for and who it’s NOT for

It’s worth it for anyone who wants to see Salvador and Maceió in one week with lodging, food and transportation already paid for, and for families who prefer a fixed price. It’s not worth it for those who want to really get to know the cities: each port of call lasts one day, and Recife isn’t on the itinerary.

Who gets frustrated: those prone to seasickness (there are full sea days between Búzios and Salvador), anyone who hates buffet and elevator lines on a ship with six thousand guests, and those expecting sandy beaches at every stop.

What nobody tells you

Boarding in the Northeast changes the order of the trip: those who get on in Maceió do Santos and Búzios in the middle and spend sea days on the way out and back. The drinks package is sold per person and, on MSC, is usually required for all adults in the cabin. The ship’s internet is expensive and slow; cell signal returns near the ports. On the Salvador departure of 12/29/2026, the itinerary changes and includes New Year’s Eve fireworks in Copacabana, from R$ 9,404 per person (Oct 2026), more than double a regular week.

Another detail that hits the wallet: the difference between ports isn’t just the cabin price. In Santos, those driving pay for seven days of parking; in Salvador and Maceió, those living far away need to add airfare and a hotel night. And the same cabin changes price depending on the date: on the Salvador departures, the week of 01/05/2027 costs R$ 840 more per person than the week of 03/09/2027 (Oct 2026). For those with flexibility, March is the cheapest month on the circuit, with still-warm water and fewer families onboard.

Conclusion

Before booking, compare the same week across the three ports: since the circuit is identical, the Maceió departure of 12/09/2026 and the Santos departure of 12/05/2026 lead to the same ship, the same ports of call and the same nights onboard, with a difference of a few hundred reais per person and in the logistics of getting to the port (Oct 2026).

To do the Northeast by ship this season, the direct route is the MSC Virtuosa: pick the cheapest port to reach, book a balcony early if that matters to you, and plan one outing per port of call. If the overnight in Salvador matters more than the price on screen, request a quote for the Buenavista in January.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cancellation and refund policy?

It depends on the fare. On MSC’s promotional fare, the penalty is 50% up to 31 days before embarkation and 100% in the final 30 days (Oct 2026); flexible fares have lower penalties.

Are there restrictions for children, seniors or pregnant travelers?

MSC does not accept pregnant travelers at 24 weeks or more by the end of the cruise and requires a minimum age for babies; there is no age limit for seniors. Minors without their parents need a notarized authorization.

Does the Northeast Brazil cruise stop in Recife?

No. In the 2026/2027 season, no ship sells embarkation or calls at Recife (Oct 2026); the closest embarkation port is Maceió.

MSC Virtuosa or Buenavista: which should you choose?

The Virtuosa has prices on screen, Northeast embarkation and weekly departures; the Buenavista has an overnight in Salvador and drinks included, but only departs from Santos or Rio and is sold by quote.
