Petrópolis doesn’t have a tradition of a public New Year’s party with a stage and fireworks: as of Oct 2026, the city government had not announced a free show for the turn from December 31, 2026 to January 1, 2027.

On New Year’s Eve itself, Palácio de Cristal was open from 10am to 8pm on Dec 31, 2025, which makes for a late-afternoon stroll through the Historic Center before dinner (Sou Petrópolis, Dec 30, 2025).
Anyone looking for fireworks needs to know a local rule: since March 2020, Municipal Law 7,956 has banned setting off fireworks with loud bangs in Petrópolis, with fines ranging from R$ 130 to R$ 26,000 (Sou Petrópolis, Dec 27, 2023). The published menu features a couvert starter, codfish salad with chickpeas, Moroccan couscous with seafood, salmon in passion fruit sauce, roast beef with gorgonzola and shrimp in a pumpkin, plus pavê, icebox cake and mousse. At the bar you’ll find Barão draft beer, sparkling wine, sodas, juices and gin and vodka drinks; wine and bottles are sold separately on site.
The page itself notes that the party takes place on the castle’s ground floors and that the buffet isn’t meant to be fine dining, but rather to serve a large crowd. Anyone after a more intimate dinner usually prefers a hotel dinner in the Historic Center.

In the 2025/26 edition, Pousada Paraíso Açu, on Estrada do Bonfim in Corrêas, included dinner and a midnight toast in the package and scheduled acoustic guitar and vocals by the natural pool on January 1.
The trade-off is distance. Araras and Corrêas are outside the Centro, along mountain roads, and Itaipava is about 15 km from the Historic Center. Without a car, a rural inn becomes a self-contained destination: you have dinner, watch the midnight countdown and sleep right there. With a car, it pairs well with Castelo de Itaipava, which sits along the same stretch of BR-040.
Before booking, ask the lodging three things: whether the Dec 31 dinner is included in the rate or charged separately, what the minimum stay is for the year-end package, and whether free cancellation is available. In the search on 10/09/2026, Suites Caipira, in Vale das Videiras, Araras, was going for R$ 1,050 for three nights for a couple on Booking, with breakfast and free cancellation.
How to get to Petrópolis and back after midnight
Petrópolis has no commercial airport: you fly into Rio de Janeiro and drive the rest of the way on BR-040, the Rio–Juiz de Fora highway. For New Year’s, the critical point is getting back from the party, since the city government hasn’t announced special transport and the Castelo party ends at 3am.
Stress-free arrival for New Year’s
- Flight: you’ll land at Galeão (GIG) or Santos Dumont (SDU) in Rio. Compare cash and miles fares on FlipMilhas and try to arrive by December 30.
- Bus: from Rio, intercity buses arrive at the Bingen bus station, which isn’t next to Museu Imperial; from the terminal, a taxi or rideshare takes you to the Centro or Itaipava.
