Who’s performing at Rio’s 2027 New Year’s Eve?
Nobody yet. City Hall and Riotur haven’t announced singers, stages or set times for the start of 2027. The only official step so far is a Riotur tender, dated 07/30/2026, to hire barges and tugboats for the Copacabana fireworks.
For a sense of the timeline: the previous year’s lineup was announced in November 2025, and the operational plan (road closures, subway, barges) came out on December 26. Names circulating on social media before that, without a City Hall source, are just guesses.
Who performed at the last New Year’s Eve
Copacabana had three stages. On the Palco Rio, in front of the Copacabana Palace, Gilberto Gil with Ney Matogrosso played, then João Gomes with Iza at midnight and Alok at 2 a.m. The Palco Samba, at Posto 6, featured Roberta Sá, Diogo Nogueira and Grande Rio. In Leme, the gospel stage had Midian Lima and Thalles Roberto (Riotur). Shows started at 6 p.m.
Where to watch Rio’s New Year’s Eve fireworks besides Copacabana
Copacabana is the biggest stage, but not the only one. At the last New Year’s Eve, City Hall set up 13 stages and held fireworks at five points across the city. If you’re staying in the North Zone or West Zone, or want to escape 2.5 million people, there are options closer to home.

What will Copacabana’s 2027 fireworks be like?
Riotur has already tendered the maritime transport for the 2026/2027 display, so the fireworks are being prepared. The duration and number of barges come out in the operational plan, close to Christmas. At the last New Year’s Eve it was 12 minutes with 19 barges, the biggest display ever held in Rio, plus a 1,200-drone show with an Alok soundtrack.
Is Copacabana’s New Year’s Eve free?
Yes, the party on the sand is free and requires no ticket, with shows and fireworks, at least at the last edition. 2026 edition The 2027 rules (access points, bag checks, prohibited items) come out with the operational plan.
In 2026, glass bottles, containers over 25 liters, fireworks, bicycles and surfboards were banned. What costs money are the parties at hotels, rooftops and kiosks, with their own tickets, and the comfort of watching the fireworks seated, with a bathroom and a drink.

Three parties along the Copacabana beachfront are already selling tickets for the 2027 turn of the year. All of them face the fireworks. The difference is in what the ticket includes and who can get in.

To spend less, the Arena has the cheapest ticket with a view. To stay seated, the Hilton’s Clarice has tables, but no ocean view. If you want to watch the fireworks from up high, you need the Isabel. With kids, the Arena and Clarice charge half (at Clarice, kids up to 5 are free); the Isabel is 18+ only. Being a guest does not get you into the party at any of the three.

New Year’s Eve by boat or cruise in Rio
Watching the fireworks from the sea, facing the beachfront, is the most sought-after way to spend New Year’s Eve in Rio. There are two routes. Speedboats and schooners leave from Marina da Glória and other piers around the bay, are sold by group and usually cost far more on 12/31 than on a regular day. Confirm departure time, anchoring spot and return. Cruises that leave from Píer Mauá and stop in front of Copacabana at midnight offer a few nights at sea with the party on board. Where to stay for Rio’s New Year’s Eve
Copacabana and Leme are the only neighborhoods you can walk back from after the fireworks. Botafogo and Flamengo are cheaper and on the subway line, but depend on the special operation, which in 2026 required a ticket bought in advance. Ipanema is close to Posto 6, but far from the main stage: expect a long walk back.

Getting to and from Copacabana on New Year’s Eve
The 2027 plan comes out close to Christmas. The 2026 one gives you a sense of what to expect. Avenida Atlântica closed at 7 a.m. on the 31st. By 7 p.m., only buses and taxis could circulate in Copacabana, and by 9 p.m. the neighborhood was closed to all vehicles. The subway ran from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m., only with the New Year’s Eve pass (R$ 15 round trip), sold online until 6 p.m. on the 31st and with a scheduled boarding time.
Getting back is the hardest part of the night. After the fireworks, stations stay packed for hours, and ride-share cars only reach you outside the blocked area, with surge pricing. If you’re staying in Copacabana or Leme, you walk back. From Botafogo or Flamengo, buy the pass as soon as sales open and pick your return station before you head out.
- On foot: the most reliable option if you’re staying in Copacabana or Leme.
- Subway: only with the New Year’s Eve pass. Follow updates on MetrôRio’s New Year’s Eve channel.
- Bus: R$ 5 per ride (2026). On New Year’s Eve, buses stop entering Copacabana at night and instead leave from terminals on the edges of the neighborhood.
- Ride-share: arrange pickup on a street outside the closure zone and expect fares up to 3 times higher.
Copacabana New Year’s Eve pitfalls: what nobody tells you
- Accommodation without the party: staying at the Arena, the Hilton or the Copacabana Palace does not give you access to the party. Tickets are sold separately and sell out before the rooms do.
- Minimum stay: beachfront hotels sell 3- to 5-night packages for New Year’s Eve. A 1-night booking almost never shows up.
- No cell signal: the network gets congested near midnight. Agree on a meeting point and time away from the beachfront and write down a phone number on paper.
- Bag on display: carry only your ID, card and phone, close to your body.
- Subway without the pass: in 2026 there was no sales at the station on New Year’s Eve night. Without a ticket bought in advance, you’re walking back or taking a ride-share.
- Umbrella: it gets in the way in crowds and may be confiscated at the bag check. Bring a rain poncho.
January 1st and tours after New Year’s Eve
January 1st, 2027 is a Friday and a holiday. Many businesses open later, and Copacabana wakes up with the sand cleanup underway. Take advantage of late check-out if the hotel offers it, and save the longer tours for the 2nd. Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf Mountain get packed on those days: book a time slot. New Year’s Eve in Rio with kids, seniors and accessibility
The sand near the stages gets packed from nightfall until after the fireworks. With small children, seniors or a wheelchair, the best options are three: watch from the hotel window or balcony, go to a party with its own facilities (at the Arena and the Hilton’s Clarice, kids pay half) or choose a neighborhood stage, like Flamengo, with fewer people.
- Bathrooms: the portable toilets along the beachfront have long lines. At a hotel party, that problem doesn’t exist.
- Noise: bring ear protection for kids. Copacabana’s fireworks lasted 12 minutes in 2026.
- Accessibility: the sand is uneven. The map of accessible areas comes out with the operational plan, and the subway only has elevators at some stations: check MetrôRio’s website.
Rio New Year’s Eve weather: what to wear and the rain plan B
New Year’s Eve in Rio is usually hot and humid, with a chance of an afternoon downpour. The tradition is to wear white (the Copa and Hilton parties ask for white with smart casual) and jump seven waves at midnight. On the sand, wear light clothing, closed sandals and a packable rain poncho. At an outdoor party, ask ahead what happens if it rains: the Hilton, for example, moves the Isabel to an indoor ballroom.
