As of September 25, 2026, the Canela city government had not released fireworks, a stage or specific programming for the night of December 31. What is already set is the 39th Sonho de Natal, from 10/30/2026 to 01/10/2027, according to Canela em Foco, and Luminata, the free light show at the Catedral de Pedra, with daily sessions at 8 p.m. On the paid side, the Vivre dinner is on sale with a listed price.
New Year’s Eve in Canela: are there fireworks at the Catedral de Pedra?
Not yet for 2027. The display in front of the Catedral de Pedra was a tradition, but it dropped off the calendar for the last two countdowns.
- 2024 arrival: 17 minutes of fireworks in front of the Cathedral at midnight, free and following the state low-noise fireworks law (Canela city government).
- 2025 arrival: the city canceled the display at the Cathedral; Canela’s New Year’s Eve attraction became the paid party at Roda Canela (Acontece Gramado, 12/27/2024).
- 2026 arrival: we found no announcement of public fireworks in Canela; the local guide Gramado Oficial noted there were no confirmed New Year’s Eve attractions in the city.
In practice, the square by the Cathedral is still the place to see the city lit up on the night of the 31st, but don’t plan your midnight there counting on fireworks. If the display returns, the announcement should come out close to December; in the meantime, the right option for free fireworks nearby is New Year’s Eve in Gramado.
Catedral de Pedra light show: schedule and what changes in 2026
The Cathedral light show returned under the name Luminata and premiered on 09/28/2026. Sessions are daily at 8 p.m., last about 6 minutes and are free, no ticket needed, outdoors (official Luminata profile, 09/29/2026), projected on the facade and parts of the church structure. Technical rehearsals began on 09/15/2026, with more than 100 spotlights, and the premiere depended on final permits, according to Portal da Folha (09/17/2026). The show may pause on maintenance days or parish celebrations.
For comparison: in 2024, the Luminata “Recomeço” show had sessions at 8 p.m. and 9 p.m., through October 31 (Hortênsias News). On the night of the 31st, with the year-end Mass, check in the square whether the 8 p.m. session will take place.
Canela’s Sonho de Natal during countdown week
The Sonho de Natal is Canela’s year-end event and keeps running during New Year’s week: the 39th edition runs through January 10, 2027. The detailed 2026 programming had not yet been published as of 09/25. In the 38th edition, there were more than 250 free attractions and Santa’s rappel descent down the Cathedral tower, with lights and music (Canela city government). For this season, the production mentions around 40 Santa descents (Portal da Folha).
The best way to fit in the Sonho de Natal is on the late afternoon of the 30th or 31st: a stroll through the square, the light show at 8 p.m. and then dinner or the trip to Gramado.
New Year’s dinner and paid parties in Canela
As of 09/25/2026, the only New Year’s dinner in Canela with open sales on Sympla was at Vivre, at the Laghetto Viverone hotel. Roda Canela had not yet announced this year’s party, and Bal Masqué, in Gramado, is the option for those who want to party into the early hours.

It’s the most common plan for those staying in Canela. On the last two countdowns, Gramado had eight minutes of free fireworks downtown, with a show on Rua Coberta starting at 10 or 10:30 p.m. The cities are about 8 km apart, via RS-235, but on the night of the 31st downtown Gramado closes to the public and parking is hard to find.
- Getting there: arrive in Gramado by around 10 p.m. and agree on a drop-off point outside the closed area.
- Getting back: book a taxi or driver for a set time; after midnight, the rideshare queue grows and fares surge.
- Alternative: have dinner at a Gramado New Year’s dinner (Prodigy and Fratello are downtown) and only head back after 1 a.m., when traffic eases.
Gramado’s Natal Luz, 8 km from Canela
If you’re spending New Year’s Eve in Canela, you’re just minutes from Natal Luz, which runs through 01/17/2027. The paid shows take place in Gramado and fit into the nights of 12/30 and 01/01. Canela is in the Serra Gaúcha, about 8 km from Gramado. The gateway is Salgado Filho International Airport in Porto Alegre; from there, it’s about a 2-hour drive to the mountains.

New Year’s Eve in Canela with kids and accessibility
With kids, Canela works well: the Sonho de Natal is family-oriented, the Cathedral show is at 8 p.m. and the Vivre dinner doesn’t charge for children up to 5. If you want to see the Gramado fireworks with a small child, plan to head back right after midnight, before the exit rush.
Accessibility: the city government has not yet published a reserved area for the 2026 Sonho de Natal. At dinners and parties, ask before buying about ramps, accessible restrooms and seating near the exit; at Roda Canela, confirm access to the cabin.
