🇧🇷 POR | 🇺🇸 EN | 🇪🇸 ES

New Year’s Eve in London 2027 (the countdown from 12/31/2026 to 01/01/2027) has its date and time confirmed by City Hall — from 8pm to 12:30am, with the fireworks launched from the London Eye — but ticket sales had not opened as of 09/26/2026. Without a ticket, you can’t get into the areas along the Thames: at the last edition, visitors paid £40 or £55 and everything sold out. If you’d rather not depend on that sale, paid parties are already on sale, from London Bridge Rooftop (up to £200) to the Ritz gala dinner (£975 per adult).

What is New Year’s Eve in London like?

New Year’s Eve in London revolves around the fireworks launched from the London Eye, with Big Ben marking midnight in the background. At the 2025/26 countdown, the show lasted about 10 minutes, with a synchronized soundtrack and a live broadcast on BBC One for those who preferred to watch from home.

The event is organized by the Mayor of London and takes place in a closed-off area along the Thames, divided into six ticketed areas: Blue, Red, Pink, Green, White and Orange, the accessible area. Each ticket is valid for one area and one numbered gate, and you can’t switch areas during the night. That was the format of the last edition; the 2027 map will be released along with the sale.

If it’s your first time, it’s worth knowing that New Year’s Eve in London isn’t just the fireworks: the whole city buzzes with parties in pubs, clubs, theaters and restaurants. The center is closed to cars, the Tube runs extended hours and thousands of people walk the streets until the early hours. It’s an intense urban experience — and it takes planning.

Official fireworks: ticket required and viewing areas

There is no free area near the London Eye: City Hall warns that anyone without a ticket cannot enter the viewing areas. For 2027, the official page only says the sale date “will be announced soon” and offers a sign-up to be notified when it opens. At the last edition, prices were as follows:

Tip: South Bank and Waterloo are right next to the fireworks areas, and the best hotel is one that saves you from crossing the city after midnight; since ticket sales haven’t opened yet, confirm the cancellation policy before booking. See hotels in South Bank for 12/30 to 01/02.

Source: London City Hall, 2025/26 edition, checked on 09/26/2026. London residents paid £20 less; prices include tax, plus the Ticketmaster fee.

Each person can buy up to 4 tickets, and the buyer may have to show photo ID at the entrance — bring your passport. Tickets are only valid if bought on Ticketmaster; those who give up resell at face value on Ticketmaster’s own Fan-to-Fan platform, with no refunds. City Hall does not recommend bringing small children, and under-16s must be accompanied by an adult.

Accessibility: the Orange area, at Albert Embankment, is about 700 m from the vehicle drop-off point and has accessible toilets, seating, a first-aid post and a hearing loop. The view of the fireworks is from the side. The other areas have no seating or reserved space for wheelchair users, and may require walking up to 2 km from the station.

Without a ticket, the alternative is to watch from afar — from distant viewpoints like Parliament Hill or Alexandra Palace, with no guarantee of a view or access — or on TV. The 2027 rules only apply once City Hall publishes them; keep an eye on the official page.

Getting to London and around on New Year’s Eve

London has six airports: Heathrow (LHR) is the main one for flights from Brazil, with direct flights from São Paulo (GRU) on LATAM and British Airways (about 12 hours). Gatwick (LGW), Stansted (STN) and Luton (LTN) handle European and low-cost flights. From any of them, the center is 30 to 90 minutes away by train or express bus. Arrive by the 30th: a delay on the eve could cost you a party you’ve already paid for.

Stress-free arrival on New Year’s Eve

  • Flight: compare direct and connecting options, paying cash or with miles, on FlipMilhas — airfare is the item that weighs most on your budget.
  • Transfer: private transfer from Heathrow to the center on Civitatis, R$ 545.17 per vehicle each way (09/26/2026); from Gatwick or Stansted, R$ 936.06. The price is per car, not per person.
  • Insurance: the UK doesn’t require insurance from Brazilians, but medical care for visitors is charged — get quotes on Seguros Promo.

On the night of the 2025/26 countdown, the Tube ran all night, but stations near the river closed or became exit-only: Westminster from 9:30pm, Embankment and Temple from 11pm, Blackfriars at 10:30pm and Charing Cross from 6pm. There were no free rides. At the last edition, Westminster, Waterloo, Lambeth and Blackfriars bridges and the Golden Jubilee Footbridge were closed to the public around the event. The best strategy: arrive by Tube, walk out to a station farther away and check the 2027 plan on the Transport for London website closer to the date.

Things to do in London before and after New Year’s Eve

Save the 31st for the party you’ve chosen and fit sightseeing into the 30th, the 1st and the 2nd. Many attractions open with reduced hours or close on the 1st, so full-day tours are better on the 2nd. To plan the rest of your trip, see the complete 5-day London itinerary.

Pitfalls and what nobody tells you about New Year’s Eve in London

London on New Year’s Eve has traps that can ruin your night if they catch you off guard. Here are the main ones:

1. Unofficial resale tickets may not get you in. At the last edition, tickets sold out and only those bought on Ticketmaster or resold on its Fan-to-Fan platform were valid. Stay away from scalpers and other sites.

2. Overloaded cell network at midnight. The mobile network gets jammed when everyone tries to call or text at the same time. Agree on a meeting point with your group before entering the zone — finding someone in there is nearly impossible.

3. You can’t switch areas. Each ticket is valid for one area and one gate; if you’re going as a group, everyone needs tickets for the same area, and the group should arrive together.

4. Uber and taxis on New Year’s Eve are a nightmare. Surge pricing, closed streets and sky-high demand send ride prices soaring. The Tube with extended hours is the best bet — but expect packed cars.

5. Lots of waiting and little comfort. The areas have toilets and food for sale, but with long lines, and chairs are not allowed (except in the Orange area). Eat beforehand and arrive early.

6. Bitter cold. December in London averages 2–7 °C, and it feels even colder by the Thames. Wear layers, a waterproof jacket and sturdy shoes — you’ll be standing for hours in London’s damp cold.

Weather and when to go to London at the end of the year

December in London is winter, with temperatures between 2 °C and 8 °C, short days (it gets dark around 4pm) and frequent rain — not heavy, but that persistent fine drizzle. On New Year’s Eve, expect damp cold and possible frost. Wear a thermal base layer, a waterproof coat, a hat, gloves and closed, water-resistant shoes. A scarf and a small crossbody bag (not a backpack) complete the kit.

The upside of London’s winter at New Year’s is the city decked out in Christmas lights: Oxford Street, Regent Street and Covent Garden stay lit until mid-January. If you arrive a few days early, you can still enjoy the decorations and Christmas markets like Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park (which runs until early January). To explore the city with someone who knows it, the London night tour shows you the illuminated sights with a guide in Portuguese.

Frequently asked questions

Where will New Year’s Eve in London 2027 take place?

City Hall confirmed the event for December 31, 2026, from 8pm to 12:30am, with fireworks at the London Eye, on the banks of the Thames. The 2027 area map will be released along with ticket sales; at the last edition, there were six areas along the river.

What is the most beautiful New Year’s Eve in Europe?

New Year’s Eve in London is often named the most beautiful in Europe, alongside Paris, with its show at the Arc de Triomphe, Edinburgh (Hogmanay) and Madeira (recognized by Guinness as the world’s largest fireworks display). What sets London apart is the combination of the fireworks with the silhouette of Big Ben and the London Eye over the Thames — an image broadcast to the whole world by the BBC.

Does the London Underground run on New Year’s Eve?

At the 2025/26 countdown, the Tube ran all night, but with no free rides and with stations near the river closed or exit-only from early evening. The 2027 plan will be published on the Transport for London website closer to the date.

Do you need a ticket to see the London fireworks?

Yes. Without a ticket, you can’t get into the areas near the London Eye. At the last edition, visitors paid £55 (category A) or £40 (category B and the accessible area), Ticketmaster only, and everything sold out. The 2027 sale date has not been announced yet.

Do Brazilians need a visa to go to London?

No visa is needed for tourism, but you do need the ETA, the electronic travel authorisation: it costs £20, is valid for 2 years and is applied for via the UK government app or website.

Is it safe to walk around London on New Year’s Eve?

London on New Year’s Eve usually has heavy foot traffic and a strong police presence in the center, but the 2027 operational plan has not been released yet. The most common risks are pickpocketing in crowds; keep your belongings close to your body and follow official transport and safety guidance on the night.

For a winter countdown with community bonfires and locals’ fireworks, also compare New Year’s Eve in Reykjavík, keeping an eye on the cold and the trip back.

To compare another celebration in the region, see New Year’s Eve in Dublin, with a three-day festival and free options, a family concert and a countdown show.

Conclusion

New Year’s Eve in London combines one of the world’s most beautiful fireworks displays with parties ranging from rooftops to gala dinners. The secret is to plan early: sign up for City Hall’s notification so you can buy your ticket as soon as sales open, book a hotel near the river or a station, and decide between the official area (more intense) and a party with a guaranteed spot. Across the Channel, New Year’s Eve in Paris 2027 already has its official time confirmed at the Arc de Triomphe. To compare other destinations, see Voyage Voyage’s New Year’s Eve comparison guide.
