This guide covers the transition from 31 December 2026 into 1 January 2027 and is part of the Voyage Voyage New Year’s Eve guide. The name “Hogmanay 2026” used by the organizers refers to the night that rings in 2027.

What is Hogmanay and why does Edinburgh celebrate for days?

Hogmanay is the Scottish celebration of the turn of the year. In Edinburgh, the tradition becomes a multi-day festival: torchlight procession, music, street party and gatherings on 1 January. Arrive only on the afternoon of 31 December and you’ll miss part of the whole experience.

First-footing is the tradition of visiting friends or neighbors after midnight, bringing gifts associated with good luck, such as shortbread or whisky. Ceilidhs are gatherings with traditional music and dancing. The song Auld Lang Syne accompanies the farewell to the old year. These traditions explain the party, but they don’t make every dance an open event: entry, age and capacity depend on the organizer.

To explore the city alongside the festivities, use the three-day Edinburgh itinerary. A plan from 29 December to 2 January fits in the procession, the big night and a slower 1 January. The accommodation consulted in this guide covers three nights, from 30 December to 2 January, and needs extending if you want to join the 29th.

The illustration represents the castle at the turn of the year; it is not a documentary record of the announced edition. Fireworks and lineup confirmations come from the official channels cited in this guide.

Public celebration: what can you do for free?

The celebration is public in the sense that it takes over the city center, but the Street Party is not free. For 2026/27, free activities have been announced within First Footin’ on 1 January; the locations, times and conditions of these activities still need to be detailed.

The castle fireworks are part of the confirmed Midnight Moment. Watching the sky from an area outside the paid perimeter doesn’t give you access to the stages, restrooms or festival services. Visibility depends on buildings, terrain, road closures and weather. In the current sources consulted, there is no reserved or guaranteed free viewpoint for this edition.

Calton Hill and Arthur’s Seat shouldn’t become a promise of the “best guaranteed spot”: before choosing any hill, check access, warnings and the weather. Walking in the dark, with wind and slippery ground, demands more than finding a point on a map. For those after the organized experience, buying the right ticket is a more predictable decision.

The new First Footin’ 2027 announcement expressly states there will be free and ticketed programming. Don’t use the 1 January 2026 schedule that still appears on one festival page as the 2027 agenda.

Choosing Old Town or New Town can allow for a planned walk back, depending on your gate and detours. See hotels in the center for 30 Dec to 2 Jan. The room doesn’t include a ticket or guarantee a view of the fireworks.

Paid parties: which tickets should you choose?

For the night of 31 December, choose between the Street Party, with roaming and entertainment on Princes Street, and the Underworld concert in West Princes Street Gardens. These are different tickets; the concert ticket doesn’t grant access to the Street Party.

What’s confirmed and what’s still missing

Underworld will provide the live soundtrack for the Midnight Moment, with fireworks, lights and projections; additional guests haven’t been announced yet. At the concert, doors open at 8pm, the stage starts at 8:50pm and the last entry listed is 11pm. At the time of checking, Gardens and Enclosure had published rates; Premium was sold out. The exact duration of the fireworks display wasn’t detailed.

For 29 December, the Torchlight Procession was announced with a meeting point at the Meadows at 6:30pm; the new price in the press release differs from the old value still shown on the event page. Sales start on 09/10 at 12pm Edinburgh time. Torch pickup points and the final map still need checking. The Festival Club will feature Blazin’ Fiddles with Karen Matheson on 29/12 and Julie Fowlis on 30/12; on 1 January, Muckle Be The Light brings together Michael Pedersen, Charlotte Church, Hollie McNish and Gordon Buchanan.

How to buy without getting the gate or ticket wrong?

Buy through the organizer’s website or the box offices it lists: Ticketmaster and Tickets Scotland. The festival states there is no official resale and that listings on Eventbrite and secondary sites are not valid. Don’t trade a verifiable ticket for a social media offer.

Check the official rules and FAQ before buying. In the Gardens, food and drinks are sold on site; don’t treat your ticket as open bar or dinner. The published information doesn’t offer those perks.

How to get back after midnight?

The most robust plan is to pick a hotel you can walk back to in the cold and check the route from your gate. As of this guide’s check, operators had not yet published the complete special Hogmanay 2026/27 service on the pages verified.

The Lothian festival page still refers to 2025/26, and the news about free trams all night is from the previous New Year’s. Don’t count on free rides, frequency or last departure from that edition. The organizer’s transport text also still keeps references to 1 January 2026.

Before heading out, settle three decisions: which gate to use, which way to return and where to meet if your group gets separated. Download a map and your hotel address; a congested network can get in the way of your ticket and ride-hailing. If you’re relying on a taxi or transfer, agree on a meeting point outside the closed roads and confirm the company operates at that hour.

Staying in Leith or away from the center can work for sightseeing, but it requires an extra plan for getting back. Don’t pick a room just because there’s a daytime bus line nearby. For an early flight on 1 January, arrange the airport separately: normal operations don’t prove a special service runs that night.

Where to stay for New Year’s Eve in Edinburgh?

Old Town and New Town are the most practical bases for combining the central party with a walk back. Haymarket and West End can work for the west side; the exact distance depends on the hotel, the gate and road closures. Booking a room doesn’t include the party, a gala or a view of the fireworks.

Which area matches your ticket?

The Old Town covers the historic area south of Princes Street, with the Royal Mile, Grassmarket and steep streets. New Town is to the north; Waterloo Place and Calton are options on the east side. Haymarket and Fountainbridge are to the west and southwest. Look at the actual route, not just the straight-line distance: stairs and hills weigh heavily at the end of the night.

The visitor levy counts too

Edinburgh charges a visitor levy of 5% on the accommodation cost before VAT, applied to the first five consecutive nights. It has been in effect for stays since 07/24/2026, with a transition rule for older bookings. Check whether it has been included; don’t add another 5% on top of a total that already contains it. See the official City of Edinburgh rule.

How much does Hogmanay cost?

Accommodation is a big expense in this search: the selected hotels cost between R$ 6,340 and R$ 7,633 for the couple’s three nights (Oct/2026). The ticket is added separately in pounds. To avoid a misleading conversion, the scenarios below keep each currency separate and do not represent the full cost of the trip.

Sources: Booking for hotel; official box office for tickets. Amounts kept in R$ + £, with no currency conversion. They do not include flights, food, airport transfers, taxis, insurance, ETA or shopping. Walking back is a scenario choice, not a guaranteed accessible route.

A special Dec 31 meal, extra nights to make the procession, checked baggage and transfers all change the math. Set aside a buffer for food and transport based on the offers you actually choose. Paying for a hotel with a view also doesn’t guarantee that the room you book has that view.

How do you get to Edinburgh and out of the airport?

The reference airport is Edinburgh Airport (EDI). To reach the center, there’s the tram and the Airlink bus; for those arriving by train, Waverley serves the center and Haymarket is on the west side. Adjust your arrival time to leave time to drop bags at the hotel before the party.

On the regular service, the airport tram runs airport–center in under 35 minutes. The Airlink operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, according to the operator. This describes the usual service; diversions and holiday schedules should be rechecked for Dec 31 and Jan 1.

FlipMilhas Compare flights to Edinburgh helps you plan arrival and departure. If you prefer pre-booked transport, Civitatis check the airport transfer with exact destination and time. Buying it does not guarantee service to the closed perimeter of the party.

Documents and insurance for the UK

For tourism with a Brazilian passport, check whether a UK ETA is required before you board. The authorization costs £20 per person, including children (Oct/2026), unless an exemption or other applicable permission applies. It is tied to your passport and does not guarantee entry. Apply through the official channel and wait for approval. Check requirements and exceptions on GOV.UK.

The UK has its own rules and is not part of the Schengen Area. Don’t use ETIAS as authorization to enter Scotland. Seguros Promo Compare travel insurance for the UK, checking medical expenses, assistance and policy conditions; insurance is a recommendation, not an entry requirement. A rental car isn’t necessary for a trip focused on the center and Hogmanay.

What to do on January 1?

For January 1, 2027, the festival announced First Footin’ with free and paid music programming and Muckle Be The Light at McEwan Hall. The full circuit schedule, with each venue and time, is still pending. Keep part of the day free for it and avoid buying overlapping events.

An independent alternative is the National Museum of Scotland, on Chambers Street: the current official page lists 12pm–5pm on January 1 with free general admission, with possible paid exhibitions. Edinburgh Castle lists 11am–5pm on that date, with last entry at 4pm. These times are from the current official pages; recheck near your trip and respect bad-weather closure notices.

Prices per person on Civitatis in Oct/2026. Starting rates, no guarantee for the holiday.

If the idea is to stretch to the Highlands, leave the excursion for a day with a confirmed departure and no conflict with your party. For the first day of the year, a short city visit preserves flexibility. Also sort out breakfast and dinner: don’t assume every restaurant is open on the holiday.

Hogmanay with kids and accessibility

Street Party, Gardens and Night Afore have a 12-and-over restriction. The FAQ requires an adult for under-16s; in the Gardens, the header mentions supervision up to 18, while the conditions say 16. If you’re traveling with a 16- or 17-year-old, confirm the rule with the box office before buying.

For under-12s, these central parties aren’t an option. The announcement mentions family programming, still without all the details. The Torchlight page recommends not bringing under-12s and requires accompaniment for under-18s; the procession shouldn’t be sold as an unrestricted outing for any age. Also check rules on strollers and torch handling.

In the Gardens, general admission has sloped terrain and is not wheelchair accessible. There is an accessible platform with limited spaces, entry via Kings Stables Road and an accessible restroom. The Street Party is a standing event, with no general seating area. Arrange assistance and a companion ticket with the access team before paying; don’t assume a standard ticket covers these needs.

Check the official accessibility guide and the FAQ on ages and rules. At the hotel, confirm elevator, adapted bathroom and the route to the gate: uneven ground and cobbled streets may require an alternative. Fireworks and lighting include intense effects; consider noise and flash sensitivity when choosing your experience.

How cold is it and what should you wear?

December and January are winter in Edinburgh. The Met Office 1991–2020 normals for Gogarbank indicate average highs near 7°C and lows near 1.5°C. That’s climatology, not a forecast for New Year’s; wind and rain can change how it feels quite a bit.

Wear layers, a waterproof coat with a hood, gloves and footwear that tolerates water and has good grip. Outdoor events ban umbrellas; camping chairs aren’t allowed in the Gardens either. Standing still in front of a stage calls for different clothing than walking around the city. Snow isn’t guaranteed: cold, wind and damp already justify the preparation.

Check the official Met Office climatology and weather warnings in the week of your trip. To compare experiences, read the guide to New Year’s in the snow and cold, New Year’s in London or New Year’s in Berlin; each party has different rules.

What should you sort out before the trip?

Sort out accommodation and tickets first, then the return and arrival. Before the trip, recheck the points still open: 2026/27 transport, the full First Footin’ schedule, concert guests, torch pickup and any weather restrictions.

Frequently asked questions

Is Hogmanay in Edinburgh free?

The Street Party and the concert in the Gardens in Edinburgh require a ticket. For January 1, 2027, First Footin’ was announced with free and paid activities; the full circuit still needs to be detailed. Being outside the paid area doesn’t guarantee a view or access to services.

Does the Underworld ticket include the Street Party?

No. The Hogmanay in the Gardens ticket with Underworld does not give access to the Princes Street Street Party. At the time of checking, Gardens cost £79 and Enclosure £89 per person, in Oct/2026. Choose your section and gate before buying.

Can kids go to Hogmanay?

Street Party, Gardens and Night Afore in Edinburgh do not admit under-12s. There is an adult requirement for teens, with disagreement over the 16 or 18 limit on the Gardens page. Confirm the condition of purchase. The 2027 family programming isn’t fully detailed yet.

Is there free transport after midnight?

There’s still no confirmation of the special free 2026/27 service on the operator pages checked. The free tram news refers to January 1, 2026. For Hogmanay 2027, arrange your return and recheck Lothian and Edinburgh Trams before the trip.

What’s open in Edinburgh on January 1?

The current official pages of the National Museum of Scotland and Edinburgh Castle list, respectively, 12pm–5pm and 11am–5pm on January 1. The castle has last entry at 4pm. Recheck near your trip. First Footin’ 2027 was also announced, with a detailed schedule pending.

For a winter New Year’s with community bonfires and residents’ fireworks, also compare New Year’s in Reykjavík, keeping cold and the trip back in mind.

To compare another celebration in the region, see New Year’s in Dublin, with a three-day festival and free options, a family concert and a New Year’s show.

Which New Year’s plan should you choose?

Choose the Street Party if your priority is the street party; choose the Gardens if the main draw is Underworld and you’re okay standing all night. To travel without a New Year’s ticket, plan the city and the confirmed January activities, without betting on a guaranteed free fireworks area. In any case, hotel and the trip back deserve a decision before the tours.
