New Year’s Eve in Hong Kong 2027: Where to Watch and Where to Stay

🇧🇷 POR | 🇺🇸 EN | 🇪🇸 ES

The Hong Kong New Year Countdown for 12/31/2026 is already on the HKTB calendar; the detailed program usually comes out in mid-December. For the 2025/26 turnover, the fireworks were canceled after the Tai Po fire and replaced by a light show in Central. For Victoria Harbour, prioritize a hotel on the same side of the harbour where you plan to watch. Tsim Sha Tsui and Wan Chai are the most practical bases.

This guide covers the turnover from December 31, 2026 to January 1, 2027. To compare other destinations, see the Voyage Voyage New Year’s Eve guide. To compare riverside countdowns and hotel galas, also see New Year’s Eve in Bangkok. Hong Kong also has Lunar New Year, a different celebration.

What’s been announced for the free New Year’s Eve in Hong Kong?

The Hong Kong New Year Countdown celebration is announced for December 31, 2026 on the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) calendar, which describes a musical pyrotechnic spectacle over Victoria Harbour. The detailed program (time, launch points and viewing areas) usually comes out in mid-December: in 2025, the HKTB released the format on 12/17. We’ll update here as soon as it’s published.

The HKTB institutional sponsorship page classifies the event as a festive celebration with a musical pyrotechnic spectacle. The public countdown page, meanwhile, asks you to follow the announcements. In the meantime, the last two turnovers show what to expect and what can change.

2026 edition For the 2025/26 turnover, there were no fireworks. After the fire at the Wang Fuk Court complex in Tai Po (11/26/2025, more than 160 dead), the HKTB canceled the pyrotechnics and moved the countdown to the pedestrian area of Chater Road in Central: a free show with Air Supply and local artists and, at midnight, a 3-minute light show that turned the facade of 8 historic buildings into countdown clocks. With the area packed, the MTR closed exits at Central station to control the crowd, and the HKTB pointed to the broadcast at the Cultural Centre in Tsim Sha Tsui as an alternative (The Standard, 01/01/2026).

For the 2024/25 turnover, the classic format: 12 minutes of fireworks over Victoria Harbour, watched by more than 400,000 people on the promenades of both shores (news.gov.hk). That’s the reference in case the fireworks return in 2026/27, as the HKTB calendar indicates.

Free · public spaces 2026 edition. The promenades of Tsim Sha Tsui and Wan Chai and the Central area are free, no ticket required. For the 2025/26 turnover, police began closing Central streets at 2 pm on the 31st and expanded the closure in phases as crowds grew; in Tsim Sha Tsui, closures were decided on the spot (Hong Kong Government, 12/30/2025). The 2026/27 map comes out together with the HKTB program.

Don’t book a pricier rate counting on midnight fireworks and a guaranteed view before checking the detailed announcement. In the meantime, choose accommodation by location and cancellation terms, not by images from previous editions.

What comes out in December: viewing and launch map, time and duration, programming before the countdown, land and sea closures and the special transport scheme (in 2025, released on 12/29–30). The daily Symphony of Lights show and the Lunar New Year fireworks are other events.

Where to watch around Victoria Harbour?

For the classic view of the Hong Kong Island buildings, the most practical starting point is the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront in Kowloon. Wan Chai makes more sense for those sleeping on the island. That’s a geographic choice; the best angle for the fireworks will depend on the next edition’s map.

AreaWhy consider itPlan limitation
Tsim Sha Tsui / Avenue of StarsView of the island across the harbour; lets you combine watching and a hotel in KowloonAccess and permitted position depend on crowd control. A room in the neighborhood may be far from the water

Central and Sheung WanBase for dinner on the island and walking toward the waterfront, following the open routeA hotel in Sheung Wan doesn’t mean immediate access to the show zone
West Kowloon / Hung HomCan come in as alternatives if the official map indicates good visibilityThey’re not automatic substitutes for Tsim Sha Tsui; distant launch or structures can limit the view
Victoria PeakElevated panorama for another part of the itineraryDon’t choose it by reflex for the turnover: distance, visibility and getting back follow a different logic

The HKTB describes the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade as a waterfront that starts near the Clock Tower and the Star Ferry and heads east. The Golden Bauhinia Square is on the Expo Promenade, next to the convention center in Wan Chai. These references locate the spaces without confirming their operation on the turnover.

Do a reconnaissance visit during the day: find the hotel entrance, the subway station, a place to eat and the way back. On the night of 12/31, follow the signage and the local staff’s guidance; a short route on the map can turn into a detour with barriers.

There’s no official arrival time that guarantees a spot. As a reference, for the 2025/26 turnover the closures in Central began at 2 pm and the Chater Road area filled up by evening, to the point that the MTR closed station exits. Arrive with several hours of margin and have a plan B. Also agree on a meeting point outside the busiest stretch.

To watch from the Kowloon side, compare hotels in Tsim Sha Tsui for 12/30 to 01/02. Sleeping on the same shore reduces reliance on a crossing after the countdown; check the exact route to the hotel.

For a daytime panorama or on another night, read the guide to Victoria Peak and the Peak Tram. The view from above and the experience of being right by the water are different itinerary choices.

Which parties and paid events to consider?

There’s a confirmed New Year’s Eve show at Kai Tak, Four Seasons parties already announced for 2026/27 and hotel and boat parties with 2025/26 turnover prices as a reference. If your goal is to spend midnight by Victoria Harbour, don’t treat the stadium show as a ticket to the harbour fireworks.

The Aaron Kwok show has an HSBC presale on 10/9–10 and Klook packages on 10/12–13, before the public sale through HK Ticketing and Damai. Times are Hong Kong time. The 01/01 session starts at 7:30 pm and is a different ticket: check the date you chose before paying.

For a dinner or party with a view, ask for answers on four points: does the table have a direct, unobstructed view? Does the ticket give access to the viewing area? Are food and drinks included, and for how long? Can kids come in, and do they pay the same? The room reservation alone doesn’t answer these questions.

On the boat, the additional issue is the authorized position at sea. The phrase “New Year’s cruise” isn’t enough: confirm whether the departure covers the countdown, what conditions allow a route change and how you get back to the hotel after disembarking. A regular 45-minute tour doesn’t prove a special New Year’s Eve departure.

How much does the Aaron Kwok show cost on the turnover?

Kai Tak Sports Park announces tickets from HK$ 480 to HK$ 1,680, excluding service fee, in Oct/2026. The 12/31/2026 performance starts at 9:30 pm, with public sale announced for 10/14 at 10 am local time. Check section, session and total charged at the box office.

How to get back after midnight?

The most robust plan is to walk to a hotel on the same shore, along the open route. The 2026/27 scheme is usually announced in the last days of December. 2026 edition For the 2025/26 turnover, the MTR boosted trains from 3 pm on the 31st and ran all night on the Island, Tsuen Wan, Kwun Tong, South Island, Tung Chung, Tuen Ma, East Rail (Admiralty–Sheung Shui) and part of the Tseung Kwan O lines; the Airport Express had extended hours, 11 special bus routes ran overnight and the Central–Mid-Levels escalator operated until 3 am (Hong Kong Government).

The Star Ferry is useful on the regular itinerary; its normal schedule doesn’t guarantee a return after the countdown. | Photo: Tito Zzzz / Pexels

Star Ferry: don’t build your return on the daytime schedule

The regular Star Ferry timetable lists Central–Tsim Sha Tsui from 6:30 am to 11:30 pm in both directions, including holidays. On the Wan Chai route, the last regular times on holidays are 11 pm leaving Wan Chai and 10:50 pm leaving Tsim Sha Tsui. So the regular timetable doesn’t offer a crossing after midnight.

Even if extra service is announced, you’ll still need to check for temporary suspension during the fireworks and which pier is actually used. Use the ferry for sightseeing at another time; plan a return that stays viable without it.

MTR, taxi and walking route

Check the MTR service and the Transport Department notices close to your trip. The last train varies by station, direction and transfer; there’s no single time that works for all of Hong Kong. A station being open doesn’t mean your usual exit is open.

Being on the same side of the harbour isn’t enough: check whether you can reach the hotel on foot along the open route. Jordan, Mong Kok and North Point are not the same as sleeping next to the viewing point. If you’re with kids, a wheelchair or little appetite for walking, that difference weighs more than a small saving on the room.

If you opt for a taxi, prepare the address in Chinese and English and confirm a possible pickup point outside the closed streets. There’s no special fare or confirmed wait time here. Avoid depending on getting a car right at the exit of the show; include an alternative in your plan.

At Kai Tak, the show exit is its own operation. The concert announcement doesn’t automatically confirm extended subway or bus hours. Read the stadium’s specific guidance before the event and leave margin for moving large crowds.

Where to stay for New Year’s Eve in Hong Kong?

Tsim Sha Tsui is the first area to compare if you want the island view and plan to watch from Kowloon. Wan Chai is the alternative on the island; Central and Sheung Wan work for those prioritizing dinner and getting around on that side. Choose by the night’s route, not just by “harbour view” in the hotel name.

Tsim Sha Tsui: location before room category

Park Hotel, Holiday Inn Golden Mile and The Luxe Manor appear as bases within Tsim Sha Tsui. Gateway and Marco Polo Hongkong also come into the comparison along the axis near Harbour City and the Star Ferry. The cheapest room may face the city, not the water; none of the prices below proves a fireworks view.

Wan Chai, Sheung Wan and Jordan: when they make sense

The Harbourview, Novotel Century and Renaissance let you organize accommodation on the Wan Chai side. iclub Sheung Wan suits those who prefer the western part of the island, with travel to the waterfront. Eaton HK is on the Jordan/Nathan Road axis in Kowloon: it can serve the budget, but requires evaluating a longer walk.

Lantau and Tung Chung can be convenient for the airport or parks, but they follow a different logic for those who want to end the night at the central harbour. Mong Kok also requires travel. Don’t treat them as equivalent to Tsim Sha Tsui just because the search shows lower prices.

If the room view is a central part of the trip, ask the hotel for the exact category and which way the window faces. “Partial view,” “garden view” and “city view” are not the same as a direct view of the fireworks. Tours must be booked for a day and time with availability; they are not tickets to the countdown. Tour prices are “from,” so confirm the total for your selection. Walking assumes the hotel and the viewing spot are on the same shore and the route is open.

Flights: get a quote for your flight to Hong Kong using your actual origin and local arrival dates. The intercontinental trip may be the biggest line in your budget, but there is no verified flight price in this guide. Check duration, connections, baggage and arrival in Hong Kong before you lock in the hotel.

For the Aaron Kwok show, two tickets at the lowest advertised price come to HK$ 960, plus fees, in Oct 2026. That amount is not included in the cards and depends on availability in the HK$ 480 section. As a reference from the 2025/26 New Year, the Hyatt Centric party cost HK$ 848 per person and the Lazydays boat ran from HK$ 2,800 to HK$ 3,200 per person; those figures stay out of the cards until the new price list is out.

Traveling with a child also changes the math: a room for two adults doesn’t guarantee the family occupancy you want. Re-running the search with the child’s age can change the room, breakfast, rate and cancellation policy.

How do you get to Hong Kong and out of the airport?

The reference airport is Hong Kong International Airport, code HKG. The Airport Express links the airport to the city; according to the MTR, the trip to Hong Kong Station takes about 24 minutes. Plan to arrive before Dec 31 so you don’t stack flight connections, hotel check-in and New Year’s crowds into the same afternoon.

The Airport Express fare table, in effect since June 2026 lists the last regular train from the airport to the city at 12:48 a.m. Check the correct direction and the times for your date. The airport is not next to Victoria Harbour, and getting to Hong Kong Station or Kowloon Station still leaves a stretch to your hotel.

A private transfer can be useful with luggage and kids, but there is no verified vehicle quote in this guide. If you book one, confirm arrival, waiting time in case of delay and real capacity for passengers and bags. A car to the airport also doesn’t solve access to the streets closed for New Year’s.

You can explore both shores with public transport and planned walks. Renting a car isn’t a priority for this urban slice of the trip. The Hong Kong guide helps you organize the rest of your stay.

What documents and insurance should you arrange?

For a tourist visit, Brazilians are visa-exempt for Hong Kong for up to 90 days, according to the Immigration Department, subject to admission on arrival. Hong Kong has its own rules: this status does not automatically authorize a visit to mainland China.

Check the Hong Kong government entry rules for your passport and reason for travel. Have sufficient funds and a return or onward ticket when applicable. International layovers also need to be checked by airport, transit and any exit from the connection area.

Travel insurance is recommended to cover medical assistance, baggage and delays; we don’t present it as a Hong Kong entry requirement. Compare limits, deductibles, exclusions and coverage conditions for your trip. If you include Macau or other destinations, they must be correctly listed in the policy.

Seguros Promo Compare travel insurance for Hong Kong. Choose based on what the plan covers and the assistance conditions, not just the lowest price.

Save your bookings and addresses offline and keep a way to stay in touch within your group. If your itinerary includes Macau, check its documents and the return separately; don’t try to squeeze that trip into leaving the harbour celebration.

What’s the weather like, what should you wear and when should you arrive?

January is a cool month in Hong Kong. The 1991–2020 normals from the Hong Kong Observatory show an average low of 14.6°C, an average high of 18.7°C and 33.2 mm of monthly rain. These are historical averages, not a forecast for New Year’s night.

The HKO’s official climate data helps you pack. To stand still by the water, bring layers and something that blocks the wind. How cold it feels while you wait can differ from the temperature during a daytime walk.

Arriving on Dec 29 or 30 gives you time to get your bearings and adjust your sleep after the flight. If you arrive only on Dec 31, you’re more dependent on punctuality, check-in and space for your bags. Avoid booking a long tour that ends far from your viewing spot that afternoon.

Check the forecast and official notices close to the date. Bad weather or security changes can alter the experience. Choose flexible bookings when your plan depends on clear skies or sailing; “free cancellation” has a deadline and shouldn’t be confused with a guaranteed refund for any reason.

How do you plan with kids and accessibility?

With a small child or reduced mobility, prioritize a short wait, a known restroom and a simple way back. The HKTB doesn’t usually publish a kids’ area or accessible section for the countdown; expect dense crowds, like the more than 400,000 at the 2024/25 New Year. A paid party only improves that plan if its facilities and rules are verified.

A stroller can help during the day but makes moving around harder in a crowded stretch. Plan meals and rest before heading out, bring only what you need and set a time to give up if the wait gets uncomfortable. If there are fireworks, consider noise sensitivity; prefer being able to step away without crossing the crowd.

The Tsim Sha Tsui accessibility map lists an elevator at Exit A1 in the unpaid area. Exits H/R have elevators not operated by the MTR. Special service can change entrances and circulation: confirm the full route between platform, street, viewing spot and hotel, including restrooms.

Star Ferry reports wheelchair boarding on the lower deck, with a limit of up to four per ferry; the Wan Chai route has particular deck-use rules. Confirm the route with the operator before relying on it. Regular accessibility doesn’t prove access during a special operation.

For the hotel, ask for confirmation of the accessible room category, bathroom, elevator and any step at the entrance. For a show or dinner, check seating, companion tickets, age rules and restroom access at the venue. Ask these questions before paying a non-refundable rate.

What should you do on January 1?

January 1, 2027, will be a Friday and a public holiday in Hong Kong, according to the government calendar. That doesn’t mean every attraction closes or that all of them run their usual hours. Plan a light day and confirm each place’s calendar before booking.

A morning with no fixed schedule fits the night before: breakfast, a walk along the waterfront and a regular Star Ferry crossing, if it’s running normally. Book attractions with tickets for later or for Jan 2 when that reduces the risk of missing a reservation.

If the sky is clear, Victoria Peak can make the itinerary, with attention to lines and the trip back. A museum, restaurant or park needs its own operating check; a page saying “open daily” isn’t enough. For the holiday, also confirm the last entry, not just the closing time.

The Symphony of Lights by traditional boat is an option for another night of the trip: Civitatis describes a 45-minute ride with music and one drink. The activity is not wheelchair accessible and is non-refundable according to the page we checked. It is not the same as the New Year’s celebration and does not confirm operation on Jan 1.

The Aaron Kwok show also has a confirmed date on Jan 1, at 7:30 p.m., at Kai Tak. It’s an alternative for anyone who prefers to spend the night of Dec 31 by the harbour and go to the concert the next day, as long as you can get a ticket for the right date.

The official 2027 public holiday calendar distinguishes this holiday from Lunar New Year, which begins on February 6. Planning a trip for January doesn’t mean you’ll find that other celebration’s program.

What should you check before you pay?

The biggest traps in this planning are confusing location with a view and confusing an old schedule with the next edition. Use the full booking date and a clear description of what’s included; a pretty picture and the neighborhood name don’t settle those two decisions.

Don’t try to see the show at Kai Tak and the countdown at Victoria Harbour on the same night counting on a quick crossing. The show starts at 9:30 p.m., but no published end time allows us to promise that combination. Pick the main commitment of the night.

Hong Kong uses UTC+8. The times published here are local; when booking from Brazil, distinguish the departure date from the arrival date. A flight leaving Brazil one day may land in Hong Kong only the next day or later, depending on the connection.

Checklist for planning New Year’s Eve

Settle first what determines the route of the night: which side of the harbour, the hotel and any ticket. Transport, tours and food should fit into that plan. Keep the confirmation of the conditions, along with your payment receipt.

Frequently asked questions

Are the New Year’s Eve fireworks in Hong Kong 2027 fully confirmed?

The HKTB lists the Hong Kong New Year Countdown on 12/31/2026 as a musical pyrotechnic show; the detailed program usually comes out in mid-December. For the 2025/26 countdown, the fireworks were canceled after the Tai Po fire and replaced by a 3-minute light show in Central; for 2024/25, it was 12 minutes of fireworks over Victoria Harbour.

Is it better to stay in Tsim Sha Tsui or Wan Chai?

Tsim Sha Tsui is the base to compare if you want to watch from the Kowloon side, with views of the island. Wan Chai makes sense for staying and watching from the island side, depending on the edition’s map. In both, check the walking route to your hotel and the room category.

Can you take the Star Ferry back after midnight?

The regular Central–Tsim Sha Tsui schedule ends at 11:30 pm and won’t get you back after the countdown. The special 2026/27 arrangement usually comes out in late December; in 2025/26 the extra service was on the MTR, which ran all night on 8 lines. Don’t count on a crossing after midnight without checking the route, temporary suspensions and the last boarding.

Does the Symphony of Lights boat ticket work for New Year’s Eve?

The regular Symphony of Lights tour sold by Civitatis doesn’t guarantee a departure that covers the countdown. For a special boat, the offer needs to state 12/31/2026, boarding and ending times, pier, sailing conditions and what happens if the show changes.

Is New Year’s Eve in Hong Kong the same as Chinese New Year?

The countdown from 12/31/2026 to 01/01/2027 follows the civil calendar. Lunar New Year 2027 begins on February 6 and has its own program. Parades and fireworks from that period shouldn’t be presented as part of the January countdown agenda.

Which plan should you choose?

For a first countdown by Victoria Harbour, compare Tsim Sha Tsui and plan to watch from Kowloon, walking back through the areas as they’re opened. If your dinner or hotel is on the island, plan your night in Wan Chai or Central. If you’d rather see a concert, Kai Tak is a confirmed alternative, with different logistics.

The decision you can already make is which side you’ll sleep on and the terms of your booking. The fireworks program, public areas and special transport come out in December; until then, use the 2025/26 countdown (light show in Central and all-night metro) and 2024/25 (12 minutes of fireworks over the harbour) as a reference.
