🇧🇷 POR | 🇺🇸 EN | 🇪🇸 ES

New Year’s Eve in Seoul revolves around Bosingak: the bell ceremony is on the city calendar for December 31, 2026. For the 2025/26 turnover, the program ran from 11pm to 12:20am, with 33 bell tolls at midnight, free entry and extended subway service until 2am; the 2026/27 plan usually comes out in late December. Choosing a hotel in Jongno or Insadong makes it easier to plan the walk back; private parties require reservations and have their own rules.

New Year’s Eve in Seoul: what’s announced at Bosingak?

The New Year’s Eve Bell-Ringing Ceremony appears on the official Seoul Metropolitan Government calendar for 12/31/2026–01/01/2027. 2026 edition For the 2025/26 turnover, according to the city government, the program ran from 11pm on 12/31 to 12:20am on 01/01, with free entry and no registration. Before the bell, there were pansori, dance and choir performances; at midnight, 11 honored citizens (including singer Sean) rang the 33 bell tolls, with a projection on the pavilion facade; afterward, a Crying Nut show. The annual city calendar places the celebration at Bosingak, in the Jongno area.

Bosingak is a traditional pavilion surrounded by the modern city center. According to Visit Seoul, the official tourism board, the tradition is to ring 33 bell tolls at midnight as December 31 turns into January. The 2026/27 program is usually announced in the last week of December; we’ll update here once it’s out.

The address is 54 Jong-ro, Jongno-gu. Jonggak Station, line 1, exit 4, is the usual access point described by official tourism. On the night of the event, though, that changes: for the 2025/26 turnover, trains skipped Jonggak from 11pm to 1am, and the guidance was to get off at Jongno 3-ga, Gwanghwamun or Euljiro 1-ga. The surrounding streets (Jongno, Cheonggyebuk-ro and Ujeongguk-ro) were closed to cars from 6pm on 12/31 to 7am on 01/01, and police divided the bell area into 12 fenced sectors with entry limits. Also plan an alternative approach using your transit map; avoid arranging to meet exclusively at one station exit.

The city celebration is part of the public program. Entry is free, but capacity controlled by sectors makes a difference: police expected the crowd peak between 11:50pm and 12:30am for the 2025/26 turnover. Arrive before 11pm if you want to be near the pavilion. Restaurant reservations, hotel dinners and party tickets are separate products: none of them should be understood as reserved access to the bell.

Where to see fireworks: Bosingak or the Han River?

The Bosingak ritual centers on the bell. For the 2025/26 turnover, the official Bosingak program did not include fireworks: the highlight was the projection on the pavilion facade. The Yeouido image in this guide shows a fireworks festival in Yeouido; it does not represent a confirmed New Year’s Eve attraction. Avoid picking a lookout or riverbank expecting fireworks at Bosingak: the downtown celebration is the bell, not a fireworks show.

The most recent city announcement for the Seoul Winter Festival schedules the festival from December 2026 through January 31, 2027, with areas such as Gwanghwamun, Cheonggyecheon, Seoul Plaza, Bosingak and DDP. For the 2025/26 turnover, the Gwanghwamun market and the Cheonggyecheon lantern festival stayed open until 1am, and the Seoul Plaza ice rink until 12:30am.

For the night’s logistics, staying in Jongno or Insadong lets you plan a walk to the hotel and reduces reliance on one last connection. Check the actual route between your accommodation’s address and the pavilion, keeping in mind the cold, stairs and possible closures. The distance shown as “downtown” in hotel searches is not the distance to Bosingak.

Jongno and Insadong are home to the central bases selected in this guide. See hotels in Jongno for Dec 30 to Jan 2

Which paid parties and dinners should you consider?

Paid parties, hotel menus and bars offer a different night from the public ceremony. Commercial programs must specify 12/31/2026, times, inclusions, age limits and cancellation. The Market Kitchen at the Four Seasons already publishes its special 12/31/2026 buffet with prices and times. It’s a dinner that wraps up before midnight; the hotel’s other restaurants’ festive menus come out closer to the date.

For the 12/31/2026 buffet, the official reservation requires a ₩100,000 deposit per adult to confirm, on a first-paid basis. The deposit is refunded during the meal and the bill is paid on site; so it’s not an extra fee added to the advertised price. The published policy deducts 50% of the deposit for cancellations seven days out and 100% five days out; check the applicable deadline when booking.

The restaurant lists a child rate for ages 4 to 12 in its regular restaurant rules; confirm the age bracket and charges for minors when booking the date. The 12/31/2026 child prices are in the table. The last seating ends at 9:50pm: dinner at the Four Seasons does not include reserved access to Bosingak, transport or staying until the countdown. The buffet conditions and address are in the official The Market Kitchen reservation.

Charles H has a minimum age of 19 under its regular rule. It also restricts sportswear and flip-flops, and notes limited availability for early-evening reservations. Traveling with teens means choosing another program; if you want to hear the bell and then head to the bar, keep in mind that regular closing is 1:30am, without assuming extended service on New Year’s Eve.

Before paying for a dinner or party, ask for confirmation of your table or ticket, included drinks, end time, service charge, charges for children and cancellation policy. Read the reservation for the correct date: “festive,” “New Year” and “holiday dinner” can cover different days. An early dinner may end before the countdown.

How do you get back after midnight?

Plan your return before heading out: a walk to a central hotel, a night bus route and a taxi as a backup. 2026 edition For the 2025/26 turnover, the city government extended the last subway on lines 1 to 9, Ui-Sinseol and Sillim by about an hour, with arrivals at terminals until 2am and 104 extra trips; about 45 bus lines passing through the area ran until 2am, and 47 lines were rerouted from 6pm to 7am. There is no subway all night. The 2026/27 plan usually comes out between December 26 and 30.

The city government’s transport table lists a basic adult subway fare of ₩1,550 with card or ₩1,650 with a single ticket, with distance surcharges. That helps plan sightseeing days, but the last train time must be checked for your station, direction and any connection. The last train passing one point may not let you complete another line.

Owl buses: a regular late-night alternative

The city government publishes 14 Owl bus lines, with network operation described between 11pm and 6am and a fare of ₩2,500 with card. In the current table consulted in October 2026, N26 and N37 are examples to look up depending on your hotel’s direction. That doesn’t mean every line runs until 6am or that a stop stays open during closures.

Regular lineCity table data
N26 · Banghwa–Sinnae20–25 minute intervals; departures from terminals between midnight and 3:25am.
N37 · Jangji–Jingwan25–30 minute intervals; departures from terminals between midnight and 3:10am.

Those times are terminal departures, not passing times at Bosingak. Check Naver Map or Kakao Map with your hotel address as the destination, confirm the direction, save the stop name in Korean and check for reroutes on the day. The static map on the city page has outdated information; for boarding, prefer the updated route and stop. Carry a transit card with enough balance.

Taxi: night surcharge and pickup

For a regular sedan taxi, the city table lists night surcharges of 20% between 10–11pm, 40% between 11pm–2am and 20% between 2–4am. The base fare is not the full cost of the ride: distance, time and category go into the price. Premium vehicles and app-booked rides may follow a different table.

After the bell, look for a permitted spot outside the closed area and accept only regular pickups or rides identified through the app. Save your hotel’s name and address in Korean, plus the reservation offline. If there’s a line, keep the bus and walking options; don’t assume you’ll be able to call a car right in front of the pavilion.

Which hotels make getting back from Bosingak easier?

Jongno and Insadong are the most coherent bases for this focus: the eight selected hotels are in the central Jongno area, with addresses verified on Booking. The choice favors planning a walk back, though the exact route depends on barriers, the room booked and your group’s mobility needs.

Booking and Civitatis, search of 10/09/2026. AREX: two one-way tickets; continuing to the hotel depends on your route. Lookout subject to date and ticket conditions.

The airport train ends at Seoul Station, and the selected hotels are in Jongno: set aside time and balance to continue the journey. Likewise, a lookout ticket is not a New Year’s Eve reservation. If you decide to add a private dinner, add up the valid 12/31/2026 offer after checking exactly what it covers.

How do you get there from Incheon and prepare flights and documents?

Arriving via Incheon Airport means organizing the leg to Seoul Station and then the connection to Jongno. The official AREX Express takes 43 minutes from Terminal 1 and 51 minutes from Terminal 2. Those times are for the train; immigration, baggage, platform access and getting to the hotel come on top of them.

In the current regular Express table, the last trains to Seoul leave at 10:48pm from Terminal 1 and 10:40pm from Terminal 2; from Seoul Station to the airport, the last departure is 11pm. First departures are 5:24am from T1, 5:16am from T2 and 6am from Seoul Station. The AREX Express is not an option after the bell: for an early flight on January 1, arrange suitable transport or a night near the airport.

These are regular times, subject to rechecking close to your flight. The Express train and the All Stop train are different services; buy the correct ticket and confirm whether your reservation requires exchanging a voucher or selecting a seat. A train price doesn’t include a ride to the hotel. The AREX offer seen on Civitatis is non-refundable; children under 6 travel free only on a guardian’s lap. The partner identifies the product as not wheelchair accessible: those needing assistance should check with the operator before buying. For private transfers, verify passenger and luggage capacity, terminal, time and total charge per vehicle.

FlipMilhas Comparing flights to Incheon on FlipMilhas helps align arrival and return before choosing the hotel. The search opens an example departing from São Paulo: adjust the departure city, connections and dates to your trip. For a car with driver, check transfers in Seoul and provide the full accommodation address.

The official K-ETA portal lists Brazil among the nationalities eligible for tourist visits of up to 90 days. Before your trip, check the authorization requirement or your exemption according to nationality, age and entry date. Don’t treat an announcement of temporary exemption for beneficiary countries as automatic exemption for every Brazilian, and don’t assume an extension for a 2027 entry.

Passport, applicable authorization and any arrival declaration should be sorted before boarding. For trip protection, compare insurance on Seguros Promo considering medical expenses, delays and baggage conditions; read exclusions and deductibles. The insurance recommendation here doesn’t imply an immigration requirement.

How do you handle cold, kids and accessibility?

Seoul’s winter runs from December to February, with cold, dry air and possible snow, according to the official 2026 tourism guide. The seasonal range shown is −6°C to 7°C; that’s a climate reference, not a forecast for the night of 12/31. Plan clothing for a long wait outdoors.

A warm coat, layers, a beanie, gloves and proper footwear help you adapt the plan to the cold. Wet pavement, ice and snow call for careful walking. Check the forecast close to your trip; if conditions don’t favor staying out on the street, opt for a reserved dinner and a short trip back, with a set closing time. Snow is never guaranteed on the itinerary.

With kids, the combination of the early hours, the crowd and the cold can weigh more heavily than the ceremony itself. The Bosingak ceremony is open and free, but the crowd at its peak, between 11:50 pm and 12:30 am, is a lot for small children; at Charles H the standard rule is 19 and over, so it doesn’t work as a family alternative. Pick a meeting point outside the flow of people and agree on a bail-out time in case the group is tired.

On accessibility, a central address and the presence of a subway don’t prove a continuous step-free route or a reserved area at the ceremony. Before booking, ask your hotel to confirm an accessible room and study the actual route to Bosingak. Keep in mind that Jonggak has no stops from 11 pm to 1 am (that’s how it was in 2025/26): choose a station with an elevator among Jongno 3-ga, Gwanghwamun and Euljiro 1-ga, and get your questions answered through the Dasan Call Center (120); keep a plan with pre-booked transport if the route doesn’t meet the group’s needs.

What to do on January 1 in Seoul?

Plan January 1 as a light day: a late breakfast and a stroll through the center pair better with a night out until the early hours. Restaurants, malls and attractions usually publish their holiday hours in December. A winter festival calendar doesn’t guarantee that every venue will be open on the holiday.

There’s one concrete restriction for your itinerary: the National Folk Museum is closed on January 1, according to the visiting policy published by the museum itself. On its other open days from November to February, regular hours are 9 am–5 pm, with entry until 4 pm. Save that visit for another date and check for additional notices close to your trip.

A walk through Insadong or the central areas can work as a flexible plan, depending on the weather and sidewalk conditions. To enter palaces, visit an observation deck or join a guided tour, confirm the product’s calendar before slotting it into January 1. The Seoul Winter Festival program is a starting point for researching specific activities, without assuming everything is open that morning.

January’s New Year is the solar calendar one. Seollal is the lunar New Year, celebrated on a different date; January hours shouldn’t be inferred from Seollal notices. If your airport return falls on the holiday, factor in luggage, check-out and a buffer for your connection, even if it’s a short sightseeing day.

What should you sort out first for the trip?

Sort out flights and lodging with the ceremony’s address in mind, then your arrival, the trip back in the early hours and any activities with fixed times. The plan for getting back comes before the party: it determines whether central lodging works for your group and whether a dinner farther away fits into the same night.

The main traps are booking dinner for the wrong date, treating an old price as current, confusing the bus terminal’s schedule with a stop on the route, and counting on the last subway connection without checking it. Save your reservations and hotel address offline; have a backup meeting point and battery power to check the route.

Frequently asked questions about New Year’s Eve in Seoul

How many times does the Bosingak bell ring?

The tradition described by Visit Seoul is 33 rings at midnight on the turn from December to January. For the 2025/26 countdown, the program ran from 11 pm to 12:20 am, with 11 citizens honored by ringing the bell. The 12/31/2026 ceremony is on the city calendar; the program usually comes out in the last week of December.

Does the subway run all night on New Year’s Eve in Seoul?

Don’t count on continuous service. For the 2025/26 countdown, the last subway was extended until around 2 am (lines 1 to 9, Ui-Sinseol and Sillim) and trains didn’t stop at Jonggak from 11 pm to 1 am. After 2 am, you’re left with Owl buses and taxis. The 2026/27 plan usually comes out at the end of December.

Is there a minimum age for Charles H?

Yes. Charles H’s standard rule, published by Four Seasons, admits adults 19 and over. Regular hours are 5 pm–1:30 am, with last call at 1 am; no special New Year’s Eve package has been announced.

Is January’s New Year the same thing as Seollal?

No. The countdown from December to January follows the solar calendar, while Seollal is the lunar New Year and falls on a different date. Closure and transport notices for one period shouldn’t automatically be applied to the other.

Bosingak and a well-planned trip back

For this New Year’s Eve in Seoul, the most useful decision is to choose your base together with your trip back: Jongno or Insadong to organize your walk, a night bus for a confirmed route and a taxi as a backup. The Bosingak date is on the calendar, and the 2025/26 countdown serves as a map: arrive before 11 pm, avoid Jonggak station and head back by 2 am by subway or bus.
