Will Cabo Frio have a New Year’s Eve celebration in 2027?

No confirmation yet. As of 09/25/2026, the city government’s news site has published nothing about the 2027 celebration: no shows, no fireworks, no traffic plan. The most recent seasonal news is about aviation: the return of direct flights to the city’s airport, starting in December.

History shows why it’s worth keeping an eye on. For the 2024 celebration there were shows at Praia do Forte and in Tamoios, but no fireworks. For the 2025 celebration, the city government canceled the shows and the fireworks (Folha dos Lagos, 12/28/2024). For the 2026 celebration, the party came back bigger: the city government announced the lineup on December 19, 2025 and called it the city’s “biggest New Year’s Eve ever,” with an estimated crowd of 1.5 million people.

Who performed at the last celebration

There were three nights of free shows, all starting at 10 p.m. On the 31st, Sorriso Maroto took the stage at Praia do Forte right after the fireworks.

Where to watch the fireworks on New Year’s Eve in Cabo Frio

At Praia do Forte, for free and with no ticket, at least at the last edition. 2026 edition It’s the city’s postcard, near downtown, and where the main stage goes up. In 2026, the fireworks launched from three barges positioned about 600 meters from Boca da Barra and lasted 15 minutes. Big screens along the waterfront helped those standing far from the stage.

Another free New Year’s Eve near Rio is Niterói‘s, with Alceu Valença and João Gomes confirmed for 2027.

The second spot is Pontal de Santo Antônio, in the Tamoios district, near the border with Barra de São João. Tamoios had its own stage on all three nights and a fireworks barge just for it. It’s the option for those staying in Unamar or the surrounding area who want to escape the downtown crowd.

At the last celebration, the rules were these (city government, 12/20/2025):

• Bag checks at the entrance: on the 31st, 17 checkpoints with metal detectors controlled access to Praia do Forte starting at 10 a.m.
• Banned: glass bottles and cups, sharp objects and speakers.
• Street vendors: only those registered with the city government could sell.

On a tight budget, Praia do Forte does the trick: the show and the fireworks are free, and the only difference is what you spend on food and drinks. If you want a less crowded spot, you have two options: Tamoios, with its own stage, or a small party at Praia das Conchas, if it happens again.

Where to stay on New Year’s Eve in Cabo Frio

Availability is already tight. On 09/25/2026, Booking showed only 14 hotels and inns rated 8 or higher with availability in Cabo Frio for 12/30 to 01/02, and three well-rated hotels were already full: Malibu Palace, Oásis Cabo Frio and Paradiso Peró. Among those with availability, most cost between R$ 2,400 and R$ 4,500 for a couple (3 nights).

For the party, the best bet is downtown or Braga, near Praia do Forte: you can walk there and back, without depending on a car on the night of the road closures. Peró and Praia do Foguete are about 4 to 5 km from downtown, quieter, and require a car or rideshare on New Year’s Eve. Book with free cancellation, since the lineup hasn’t come out yet.

How to get to and from New Year’s Eve in Cabo Frio

By plane, the big news this season: Cabo Frio International Airport is getting regular flights again. LATAM announced the direct Guarulhos–Cabo Frio route, with four flights per week (Monday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday) starting in December 2026 (city government, 08/05/2026). Azul returns with flights from Belo Horizonte from 12/12 to 02/27, every day between 12/28 and 01/03, and tickets are already on sale (city government, 09/02/2026). From other cities, the route is still Galeão, in Rio, then bus or car.

By bus, Viação 1001 leaves from Rodoviária Novo Rio frequently. For New Year’s Eve, buy the return trip along with the outbound: the January 1st departures fill up fast.

By car, it’s about 168 km from Rio via the Rio–Niterói Bridge and Via Lagos, with heavy traffic on the 30th and 31st. Arrive before the 29th, when the Praia do Forte waterfront closes completely to cars, and leave the car at your accommodation.

How to get back after midnight

Getting back is the hardest part of the night. With the surrounding streets closed, cars and rideshares can only reach you outside the closure zone, and surge pricing climbs a lot between midnight and 3 a.m. If you’re downtown or in Braga, walk back. If you’re in Peró or Foguete, agree on a pickup point before heading out, on a street outside the closure zone.

To head home, the best move is to sleep in Cabo Frio on the night of the 31st and leave calmly. In 2026, the city government expected the biggest outbound traffic on the Sunday after New Year’s Eve, with extra support on the RJ-106 in Tamoios (city government, 01/02/2026).

New Year’s Eve in Cabo Frio with kids, seniors and accessibility

The public party is open to all ages, but waiting for midnight in the middle of the crowd tires out small children. The 29th and 30th have fewer people and are a good way to see the shows. On the night of the 31st, stay away from the front of the stage, where the sound is loudest.

New Year’s Eve is hot and humid: wear light clothing and save the sunscreen for daytime. Rain in December is possible, but usually brief — bring a rain jacket or a small umbrella.

Cabo Frio has a drier microclimate than other parts of the Rio coast because of the trade winds coming off the Atlantic.
