For the turn of the year, Atins beats Barreirinhas: that’s where the parties on the sand, the fireworks over the sea and the end-of-year nightlife are. Barreirinhas pays off for those who want to spend less on lodging, have more infrastructure (market, pharmacy, banks) and spend the night at a guesthouse dinner by the Rio Preguiças.
For first-timers: Barreirinhas is the gateway town to the Lençóis, about 250 km from São Luís on a paved road. Atins is a village within the municipality of Barreirinhas itself, at the mouth of the Rio Preguiças, where the river meets the sea; there’s no asphalt, the streets are sand and access is by speedboat along the river or by 4×4. Santo Amaro do Maranhão, the third base, is on the other side of the park and has no known New Year’s Eve party.

Can you spend New Year’s Eve in the Lençóis without buying a ticket?
Yes, but without a public stage: as of Oct/2026, Barreirinhas City Hall had not announced a free party for the 2027 turn, and the region’s party is put on by producers and guesthouses.
In practice, those who don’t buy a ticket spend the turn on the sand in Atins, near the parties, and watch the fireworks they set off at midnight: the Charme Beach Bar party, for example, sets off fireworks over the beach, according to the venue itself (Charme Atins). 2025/26 edition
In Barreirinhas, New Year’s Eve without a ticket means the banks of the Rio Preguiças, where restaurants and guesthouses hold paid dinners. Keep in mind that the sand in Atins is dark at night, with no street lighting along the beach. If you’re outside the parties, go in a group, bring a flashlight and agree on the way back to your guesthouse beforehand.
Paid parties on New Year’s Eve in Atins and Barreirinhas
The only party with tickets already on sale for 2027 is Réveillon Atins, now in its seventh edition; the others haven’t opened sales yet and appear below with data from the last edition.
Réveillon Atins 2027 On sale for 2027 — on 12/31, from 7 pm, at Pousada Vila Guara, facing the sea, at the main entrance to Praia de Atins, with DJs and a band and production by 2nd Floor. The Pé na Areia ticket costs R$ 400 + R$ 40 in fees and the Deck Gourmet, with buffet, bungalows and a view of the stage, R$ 600 + R$ 60, both in the 1st batch (Meu Bilhete, Oct/2026).
The sales page doesn’t detail drinks at Pé na Areia. In the 2025/26 edition, the R$ 300 ticket gave access only, with no open bar, according to the official website; the event site already mentions the Maranhão band Raiz Tribal for 2027, and the rest of the line-up hasn’t been released yet. Box office sales run until 12/31, but new batches go up in price.

The other formats: the Vila Aty hotel in Atins announced an eight-day program, from 12/27/2026 to 01/03/2027, for guests, with dinners at the Okarú restaurant charged separately and open to non-guests (O Maranhense, 09/04/2026). In Barreirinhas, in the 2025/26 edition, Bambaê held its dinner from 9:30 pm to 1:30 am for R$ 650 per adult, and the Portal do Sol guesthouse charged R$ 400 per adult, R$ 300 for ages 14 to 16 and R$ 200 for ages 6 to 13 (Guia de Barreirinhas).

Transfer from São Luís to Barreirinhas and Atins, and the trip back from the party
Everyone arrives through São Luís Airport (SLZ): it’s about 4 hours by road to Barreirinhas and another hour or so by speedboat or 4×4 to Atins. In December, get to São Luís by the 29th or 30th, because the whole journey takes almost a full day.
From São Luís airport to the party
- Flight: compare cash and miles fares to São Luís on FlipMilhas; prefer a flight that lands by mid-morning.
- Shared transfer: Civitatis sells the São Luís–Barreirinhas transfer from R$ 133.33 per person each way (Oct/2026), by minibus, with pickup at your hotel or the airport, about 4 h.
- Private car: to go straight from the airport without waiting for other passengers, get a quote for the São Luís–Barreirinhas route on Kiwitaxi.
- Speedboat to Atins: Civitatis sells the Barreirinhas–Atins speedboat from R$ 170 per person (Oct/2026), with the final leg by 4×4 to your guesthouse, about 2 h 30.

Day to day, the regular speedboats between Barreirinhas and Atins cost around R$ 80 per person (Oct/2026) and leave Barreirinhas at 8:30 am, 12:30 pm and 4:30 pm, returning from Atins at 7 am and 2 pm (except Saturdays, on the Satur company), according to the transport page on the Réveillon Atins website. The same site states that on 12/31 there’s an extra departure at 9 pm, with advance booking only (New Year’s Eve night speedboat).
How to get back after midnight
The trip back is the biggest practical risk of New Year’s Eve in the Lençóis. There’s no regular speedboat at dawn between Atins and Barreirinhas, and the first regular departure from Atins is at 7 am. If you sleep in Barreirinhas and go to the party in Atins, you need to arrange in advance, in writing, a private speedboat or 4×4 for the return, with a time and meeting point.
That’s why the recommendation is to sleep in Atins on the night of 12/31. The village is small: most guesthouses are just a few minutes on foot from the beach, and Pousada Vila Guara, home of the main party, is at the entrance to Praia de Atins. Bring a flashlight, because the sandy streets have little lighting.
How much does New Year’s Eve in Lençóis Maranhenses cost?
For a couple, three nights from 12/30 to 01/02 with transfer from São Luís comes to between R$ 1,730 and R$ 7,195, depending on the base and the party (Booking, Civitatis and Meu Bilhete, Oct/2026). What weighs most is lodging in Atins, which costs twice as much as Barreirinhas on those dates.

Does it rain on New Year’s Eve? December and January weather in the Lençóis
The turn of the year falls in the transition: December is still the end of the dry season and January is the start of the rains. At the INMET station in São Luís, the closest one with climate normals, average rainfall rises from 54.5 mm in December to 235.4 mm in January, and the average high stays around 32 °C in December and 31 °C in January (Climatological Normals 1991-2020, INMET).
In practice, the night of 12/31 tends to be hot and dry, with strong wind on Praia de Atins; bring light clothing, flip-flops for the sand and a thin layer for the early-morning wind. Are the lagoons full on New Year’s Eve?
Most years, no. The lagoons form with the rains from January to June and peak between June and September; between November and December, most are low or dry. New Year’s Eve in the Lençóis has few rooms and tight logistics, because everything depends on road, speedboat and a small village with few guesthouses. These are the most common mistakes made by first-timers:
- Atins fills up first: there are few guesthouses, and the highly rated ones with availability for all three nights are gone before December.
- No speedboat at dawn: if you sleep in Barreirinhas and haven’t arranged the return, you’re stuck in Atins until 7 am.
- Slower road: Civitatis warns that roadworks and the closure of a bridge along the way have been causing traffic jams between São Luís and Barreirinhas; leave buffer time for your return flight.
- Little cash in Atins: the village has little banking infrastructure; withdraw money in Barreirinhas or São Luís.

January 1st in the Lençóis: transport and tours
January 1, 2027 falls on a Friday and is a national holiday. In Atins, the day is usually spent at the beach and relaxing; to head back to Barreirinhas, count on the scheduled speedboats (regular departures from Atins at 7 a.m. and 2 p.m.) and confirm the day before whether they run on the holiday. Atins has only a small commercial scene; pousada and beach restaurants are the safest bet for lunch.
If you have an extra day or two, squeeze in a dunes circuit from Atins or Barreirinhas. Even with the lagoons low, the 4×4 ride across the dunes and the boat tour along the Rio Preguiças, with stops in Vassouras, Mandacaru and Caburé, are well worth it this time of year.

New Year’s Eve in Lençóis with kids and accessibility
With kids, Barreirinhas is the easiest base: it has a pharmacy, a supermarket and pousada dinners with children’s pricing. In the 2025/26 edition, Portal do Sol did not charge for children up to 5 and charged R$ 200 for ages 6 to 13, and Bambaê also let kids up to 5 in free (Guia de Barreirinhas). In Atins, the Vila Aty hotel announced workshops, movies and children’s theater during the New Year week for 2027, for guests.
The sales page for Réveillon Atins 2027 does not state a minimum age or any rule for children; ask the organizer before buying. The party goes on into the early hours, on the sand, with loud music, which is tough for small children.
For those with reduced mobility, Atins is difficult: there’s no pavement, the streets and beach are soft sand, you arrive by speedboat or 4×4, and the boarding point at the Barreirinhas pier has no standardized ramp. Barreirinhas has paved streets downtown and single-story pousadas; in that case, opt for a dinner at a pousada in town and confirm in writing the access to the room and the hall.
