Orlando in December and January: Crowds, Cold Weather and Costs

🇧🇷 POR | 🇺🇸 EN | 🇪🇸 ES

For Orlando in December and January, pick the weekdays of 01/11–01/14/2027 if your priority is avoiding the main event windows; pick the first half of December 2026 if you want the Christmas programming. Christmas, New Year’s, the 01/6–01/10 marathon and the 01/18 holiday all call for extra attention to bookings. January has chilly nights, and Volcano Bay will be under maintenance that season.

Which week should you choose in December or January?

If you want a window between events, start with January 11–14, 2027. The Disney marathon ends on 01/10 and the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday falls on 01/18. That sequence favors the weekdays in between. If you need a full week, arrive on Saturday, 01/9, and fly back on Saturday, 01/16: that gives you four park weekdays, from 01/11 to 01/14.

If you can only travel over New Year’s

Book your hotel and tickets for the exact dates and accept that the experience will be more competitive. Prioritize the park that matters most to your family and build in breaks. The details on fireworks and celebrations are in the New Year’s Eve in Orlando guide; for the rest of your stay, use the main itinerary page.

Is it cold in Orlando this season?

It’s mainly cold in the morning and at night: January has an average low of 49.5°F and an average high of 71.8°F. The NOAA/NWS 1991–2020 normals for Orlando International show a high of 73.8°F and a low of 52.9°F in December; in January, 71.8°F and 49.5°F. Normal monthly rainfall is around 2.5 inches in both.

Pack layers: a T-shirt for the sunny hours and a jacket for early entry, outdoor queues and the walk out after dark. Bring an extra layer for kids in the stroller. Historical averages don’t replace the forecast for your week; check the weather shortly before you pack and leave room to adjust the plan.

Hotel pool and rides that get you wet

If the pool is a priority, confirm whether the hotel’s pool is heated and what the hours are. In the parks, a ride that soaks your clothes can be less comfortable on a cold morning. Consider a change of clothes and pick your time based on the day’s temperature, rather than booking a winter trip expecting to use a water park every day.

Christmas at the parks: what changes in December?

December is worth it for the holiday programming, but some experiences require a separate ticket. Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party runs on select nights through 12/22/2026, from 7 p.m. to midnight, with entry from 4 p.m. for event ticket holders. If you’re only buying a daytime ticket, check how the event affects the end of your visit.

At Universal, Holidays at Universal Orlando runs from 11/14/2026 to 01/03/2027. The general programming is included with regular admission; the Universal Holiday Tour is a separate product. Compare what you want to see with what your chosen ticket actually includes before adding a paid night to the budget.

For Christmas with kids, the first half of December lets you look for dates before the local school break. December isn’t cheaper or emptier; the advantage is the Christmas programming. First decide whether you want a nighttime party or a daytime visit, then fit the hotel around it. A night that ends late pairs better with a next morning that has no early commitment.

January: races, holiday and maintenance

January calls for picking your week carefully: there’s a marathon, a holiday and closed attractions. Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend takes place from 01/6 to 01/10/2027. Participants can increase hotel demand and change traffic in the Disney area. If you’re running, choose your lodging based on access to the event; if you just want the parks, look at the following week.

Universal reports Volcano Bay closed starting 10/26/2026, with reopening planned on or before 04/01/2027. Popeye & Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges is under maintenance from 01/04 to 02/02/2027; Fyre Drill, at Epic Universe, from 01/25 to 02/04. Your park choice should account for these closures.

Disney After Hours at Magic Kingdom also has select nights starting 01/11/2027, with a separate ticket. The January 11–14 window is a gap between the marathon and the holiday: check park hours and events for each day.

Epic Universe in January

If Epic is a priority, check the date and what the product includes in the Epic Universe tickets guide. To cut down on waits at the other parks, the Magic Kingdom with a queue strategy guide digs deeper into planning your day.

Rock the Universe takes place at Universal Studios on 01/22 and 01/23. The event ticket we checked starts in the late afternoon and isn’t the same as a general daytime admission. If you don’t plan to attend, check the park’s official hours for that date or pick another park that day, keeping the rest of your trip order flexible.

How much do tickets and hotels cost in January?

In the 10/01/2026 quote, the Disney 4-Park Magic LATAM starting on 01/09/2027 comes to US$ 541.64 per adult 10 and older, before taxes. The official Disney calendar shows US$ 135.41 per day, multiplied by four days. That’s four admissions, one per park on separate days, valid for seven days after first use; special events are extra.

For the hotel, we compared seven nights from 01/9 to 01/16/2027, two adults and a standard room with two Queen beds. The total includes the fees shown in the search, keeping that room category across all examples. Breakfast, location and park benefits vary and are shown in the table.

Source: Booking accommodation search, quoted on 10/01/2026. For two adults, the cheapest room example plus two Disney tickets comes to US$ 1,700.28 for January 2027, before ticket taxes and excluding flights, meals, transport, insurance or Universal.

To gauge the difference for your trip, price both weeks at the same hotel and keep the room, occupancy, taxes and cancellation policy identical. Then run the same comparison with tickets; switching hotel category or the number of parks can change the conclusion.

Which base fits the season?

Choose your base based on the parks that will take up the most days and the benefits you’ll actually use. A Universal hotel with early entry should be compared against the rules and eligible attractions of that benefit. It can help organize certain days, but transport to the other parks and breakfast still count.

If you want to alternate park days with indoor plans, leave one day free during the week. The Museum of Illusions can work as a shorter activity, saving a park ticket for a day when the family needs to rest. Compare location and travel time from your hotel before locking in the plan.

Car, arrival and travel documents

Compare renting a car with the actual trips you’ll make during the week. Add hotel and park parking, tolls and fuel; if the hotel offers a shuttle, check the schedule and which destinations it serves. Your airport arrival also needs to fit your flight time and group size.

Get documents, insurance and cell service sorted before the trip. On race or event days, an app with internet access helps you check changes and travel times. If you’re driving, check the rental company’s rules, coverage and how tolls are paid in the contract, instead of comparing only the advertised daily rate.

What should you book first?

Book the week and the hotel first; then map out park days around parties, holidays and maintenance. If you want Christmas, pick the event night before scheduling an early morning the next day. If you want January with less calendar pressure, start with the weekdays of 01/11–01/14 and leave the weekend for arrival, rest or another plan.

Kennedy Space Center is an alternative for a day without a theme park, with your own transport to plan. Choose that outing based on the group’s interests and confirm what the ticket or tour includes, rather than squeezing it in just because a date was left open.

Before buying, check each park’s calendar and when your tickets start being valid. A four-day ticket has different rules from separate admissions and from a nighttime party. Keep your receipts together with the hotel booking and note which reservations need to be made after purchase.

For families with small children, the Orlando parks for small children guide helps you pick attractions. Fewer parks can be a better choice than a packed schedule, especially when cold, sleep and event times limit the day.

Use Orlando: itinerary, costs and park order as your main page to build the full trip. For this season, lock in the week that matches your priority: Christmas in the first half of December or the weekdays between the marathon and the holiday in January. Then book the products that serve that week.
