Where to Stay in Ouro Preto: Pousadas, Hills and Parking

🇧🇷 POR | 🇫🇷 FR | 🇺🇸 EN | 🇪🇸 ES

To decide where to stay in Ouro Preto, follow your itinerary. On a first trip, stay in the Historic Center, near Praça Tiradentes. Traveling with a car or family: look for a pousada with a garage and drop off at the door, in the Center or its access roads. Want to save money and can handle the hills: consider Alto da Cruz. Wheeled luggage works inside the hotel; to arrive with bags over the cobblestones, take a taxi to the front desk.

Historic Center: near Praça Tiradentes

Staying near Praça Tiradentes is the simplest choice for a first trip to Ouro Preto: you keep museums, meals and some of the churches on the same circuit. The benefit is being able to return to your room between visits without fetching the car and hunting for another spot. The geographic reference is the city’s tourist map; street incline still matters even when the distance looks short.

The address matters more than the straight-line distance

Don’t choose based on the number of meters to the square alone. Check which street the entrance is on and what the walk back looks like after dinner. In the Center, proximity to restaurants may let you leave the car parked for much of your stay. That doesn’t eliminate hills, stairs and cobblestones. If you’re traveling with someone who tires easily, ask the pousada for a description of the access to the front desk and the room.

The Hotel Pousada Casa Grande is the pick in this area for its central position on Rua Conselheiro Quintiliano. The Standard double room had a double bed and breakfast, for R$ 1,378 for two nights (11/20–22/2026). The UFOP lodging list helps you check hotel addresses. Garage, reserved spot and fees should be confirmed on the rate you choose.

At night, staying in the historic core makes dinner easy and shortens the trip back, but noise varies by room. Ask whether the window faces the street, a courtyard or a common area. A couple who wants to sleep early may prefer an interior room; anyone who values a view should accept the chance of hearing more movement. To plan your visits, see what to do in Ouro Preto at Aleijadinho’s churches.

Xavier da Veiga and Antônio Dias: churches on foot

The Rua Xavier da Veiga axis and the area around Antônio Dias suit anyone who wants to stay inside the historic circuit and plan visits on foot between churches and museums. The area is still central for tourism, but it isn’t a flat extension of Praça Tiradentes. Choose the street based on the attractions you plan to visit and your group’s tolerance for uphill walks.

The Hotel Pousada Minas Gerais is on Rua Xavier da Veiga, an address registered by UFOP, and is an option for anyone prioritizing this part of the Center. The Standard double room with a double bed cost R$ 2,280 for two nights, with breakfast and taxes included (11/20–22/2026). It’s the highest price among the three hotels compared; the booking needs to make sense for the combination of room, location and services you want to use.

Getting back after dinner

On foot, the plan is to explore the historic circuit in stages, with breaks for coffee and indoor visits. At night, think about the climb back before choosing a distant restaurant. If it rains or someone is tired, have the number of a taxi recommended by the front desk. Don’t count on straight-line proximity as a guarantee of a comfortable route with a stroller or loaded luggage.

If you’re driving, confirm the pousada’s access and where the car stays during your visit. An on-site garage saves you from managing street spots, but it may have a ramp, tight spaces or circulation that depends on other cars. Ask about these conditions if your vehicle is large. For a couple without a car, the position on the historic circuit tends to matter more than whether parking exists.

Alto da Cruz: lower rates and more climbing

Alto da Cruz is a choice for saving on lodging without leaving Ouro Preto’s historic surroundings entirely, as long as the climb is part of the decision. A lower price doesn’t automatically mean lower total spending: if every return trip needs a taxi, the room savings can shrink. Compare the nightly rate with your group’s pace and how many nights out you plan.

The Pousada Marotta has a Standard double room with a double bed for R$ 1,000 for two nights, including breakfast and taxes (11/20–22/2026). The address of the unit with its own website, on Rua Conselheiro Quintiliano, is registered by UFOP in Alto da Cruz. Use the address on your booking to confirm which unit you’re reserving, since similar names can appear in more than one listing.

At night, the advantage is returning to your pousada after enjoying the Center; don’t count on the same concentration of restaurants at your door. If you like walking and head out with a light backpack, this trade-off can pay off. For someone with reduced mobility, a small child or a traveler who wants to rest between each visit, an address with a simpler route is usually worth a higher nightly rate.

If your plan includes tours with transportation, check the meeting point and whether pickup happens at your lodging. An open-air trolley tour can be an option to see part of the city without turning every trip into a walk; the tour has its own itinerary and doesn’t work as free transport between pousada and restaurant.

Parking and luggage on the hills

Choose a pousada with a garage if the car will stay in Ouro Preto for both nights: regulated street parking serves traffic flow, it doesn’t automatically replace hotel parking. The Historic Center and Bauxita have rotating parking, with a maximum time posted on signs. Payment is through the Rotativo Digital Ouro Preto app or at authorized businesses; check hours and rates on the street signs.

Wheeled luggage: arrive by car at the door

On cobblestones and hills, dragging a full suitcase turns a short walk into an exhausting one. Arrange to be dropped off at the pousada entrance and save the walking for after check-in. A backpack or smaller bag helps on outings, but you don’t need to change luggage just because of the city. What changes your arrival is reducing the stretch you cover carrying weight.

Before booking, ask whether there are stairs between the street and the front desk, whether someone helps with luggage and whether the room requires climbing another floor. Parking and accessibility are different things. For a wheelchair or significant difficulty walking, request photos of the route and relevant dimensions directly from the lodging. That keeps you from relying on vague phrases like “close to the Center” or “easy access.”

Pousada in the center or outside it?

Stay in the Center if your main plan is Ouro Preto’s churches, museums and restaurants; stay outside when lodging and car travel are part of the trip. A pousada farther out may offer space and parking, but it adds a trip there and back to every outing. For two nights, that time cost should factor into the comparison along with price.

The prices apply to November 20–22, two nights and two adults, always in the Standard double room. The nightly rate in the table is the total divided by two, with taxes. These are values for one hotel per area, not the price of every pousada in the neighborhood. If your trip falls on Finados (All Souls’ Day), run a new search for the correct weekend.

I wouldn’t choose a pousada farther out just to save a few reais if you’re arriving without a car and plan to have dinner in the historic core. The reason is the commute: every taxi ride or walk up the hill weighs more than the difference in the nightly rate. For the November 20 holiday, lock in your base first. For New Year’s Eve in Ouro Preto, also consider the route back from the square or from whichever dinner you choose.

How to get there from the airport and bus station

If you arrive by plane, you use Belo Horizonte as your gateway and continue by road to Ouro Preto; if you arrive by bus, you get off at the bus station and arrange the final leg to your pousada. From Confins airport, the options are a direct transfer or transport to the Belo Horizonte bus station to continue by intercity bus. Check schedules and fares for your date on the company’s official website.

On arrival at the Ouro Preto bus station, a taxi to the hotel is the most comfortable choice with luggage, especially for pousadas on a hill. Rua Padre Rolim is the reference for the terminal. Send the lodging your approximate arrival time and confirm the drop-off route. Walking can be an alternative later, when you’re without bags and know the terrain of the route.

Renting a car makes more sense for combining Ouro Preto with other destinations and outlying pousadas. Within the historic circuit, it can stay in the garage while you explore the city. Book a central pousada if you want to focus your weekend on the churches; accept a base outside the core when lodging space and the road are real priorities for your itinerary.
