Where to Stay in Gramado: Best Neighborhoods and When It’s Worth Staying in Canela

🇧🇷 POR | 🇺🇸 EN | 🇪🇸 ES

For most travelers, the best place to stay is Gramado’s Centro: you can walk to Rua Coberta and the Palácio dos Festivais, the stage for O Brilho do Natal. If you have a car and are focused on saving money or finding quiet, look at Planalto, Bavária or Lago Negro. Canela only pays off if your itinerary revolves around Caracol and the Cathedral.

Where to stay in Gramado to walk everywhere?

The Centro is the answer for those arriving without a car. Rua Coberta, Praça Major Nicoletti and Avenida Borges de Medeiros are packed with shops, chocolate stores and restaurants, and the Destino Serra Gaúcha portal places Rua Coberta near the Igreja Matriz and the Palácio dos Festivais.

Tip: The Centro lets you walk to Rua Coberta and the Palácio dos Festivais. See hotels in the Centro.

The Palácio dos Festivais is at Avenida Borges de Medeiros, 2697, about 100 meters approx. from Rua Coberta. If you stay here, you can walk to O Brilho do Natal, with shows at 3 pm and 6 pm.

Pros: everything on foot, no parking hassle, easy walk back at night. Cons: higher nightly rates, crowded streets and noise on weekends; parking in the Centro is hard to find and, when the hotel offers a spot, it’s usually limited.

Is Planalto a good alternative to the Centro?

Planalto is next to the Centro, about 1.1 to 1.4 km approx. from Rua Coberta. You can walk it in about 15 to 20 minutes, and the way back may involve an uphill climb: Gramado has hilly terrain, so check the route’s elevation profile before booking.

Mini Mundo is about 1 km approx. from Rua Coberta, near Planalto. A good option for families and for those who want to pay less than in the Centro without relying on a car every day.

Pros: quieter, nightly rates tend to be lower, close to the Centro. Cons: uphill walks on the way back and taxi or ride app on rainy or cold nights.

Pros: quiet, less traffic, short drive (4 min approx.). Cons: walking to Rua Coberta is a long trek and Gramado’s terrain is hilly; at night, prefer a ride app.

Is it worth staying in Carniel?

Carniel is about 3.9 km approx. from Rua Coberta, toward Canela, and the round-trip walk isn’t realistic (about 50 minutes approx.). In practice, it’s a neighborhood for those with a car or planning to use a ride app.

Pros: nightly rates tend to be lower and the neighborhood is on the way to Canela. Cons: distance from the Centro, traffic on Avenida das Hortênsias on holidays and weekends, and transportation costs that eat into the savings.
