In the 2026/2027 season there are three ships: MSC Seaview and Costa Diadema, both leaving Santos on Sundays, and MSC Splendida, with longer departures from Rio de Janeiro. MSC Meraviglia shows up in ads for the 2027/2028 season, but the Rio de la Plata departure is still unconfirmed on Logitravel (Oct/2026).

The Seaview is the newest of the three and has more outdoor space; the Diadema spends more time in Buenos Aires (10 hours versus 8) and is the only one that stops in Montevideo. The Splendida serves those who live in Rio and want to skip the trip to Santos. How much does it cost and what’s included?

The Rio de la Plata cruise costs from R$ 4,884 to R$ 8,465 per person in an inside cabin, depending on the ship and the week (Logitravel, Oct/2026). Christmas and New Year’s weeks are the priciest; February and March, the cheapest. Prices are per person in a double cabin; third and fourth guests in the same cabin usually pay much less, which makes a difference for families.

Not included: the per-night service charge billed to your onboard account, alcoholic drinks and sodas, internet, specialty restaurants and shore excursions. To estimate the real total cost, add to the cabin price the service charge for the 7 nights, a drinks package if you drink every day, and transport to the port; the exact amount of each item varies by cruise line and should be confirmed at booking (Oct/2026). Details of the Costa package are in the guide to the Costa drinks package.

What’s the itinerary and how long at each stop?

It’s 4 days at sea and 3 stops, all during the day: the ship arrives early and leaves in the afternoon. Logitravel times (Oct/2026):

In Buenos Aires you can go ashore on your own: the terminal sits in the port area and a taxi or rideshare gets you to Puerto Madero, San Telmo and the Casa Rosada in minutes. With 8 hours, pick one neighborhood and come back with time to spare: the ship won’t wait for a late passenger who isn’t on an official excursion. In Punta del Este you disembark by tender boat, which eats up time in line; in Montevideo the ship docks near the Old Town, which you can explore on foot. Bring an international card, since on land you pay in pesos.

Where does it leave from and how do you get to the port?

Seaview and Diadema board at the passenger terminal of the Port of Santos, about 80 km from the city of São Paulo; Splendida boards at Píer Mauá, downtown Rio. From São Paulo, you get there by car, bus or transfer via the Imigrantes or Anchieta highway; arrive at the time printed on your ticket, because check-in closes before departure. Those coming from far away often sleep in Santos the night before, in Gonzaga or Ponta da Praia, near the terminal.

You can also do the route by boarding in Argentina: see when the cruise leaving from Buenos Aires is worth it, with ships, dates and prices for the season.

What cabin types are there and which is worth it?

On Seaview’s December departures, the balcony cabin has gone for the same price as an inside one (R$ 4,884, Logitravel, Oct/2026), so compare before booking. On an itinerary with four days at sea, a balcony makes a difference; an inside cabin works for those who only sleep there.

Tip: balcony cabins are the first to sell out on December and January departures, and on Seaview they started at the same price as an inside cabin; check the balcony cabins.

An oceanview cabin has a window that doesn’t open; an inside cabin has no window, but it’s the quietest and darkest for sleeping. Suites and the Seaview’s Yacht Club include butler service, a reserved pool area and an exclusive restaurant. On Costa Diadema the categories follow the same logic of inside, oceanview, balcony and suite, with prices by date on Logitravel (Oct/2026). If you get seasick, prefer a cabin on a low deck and mid-ship, where the motion is gentler.

What documents should you bring? Is RG enough?

Yes, your RG is enough. Since it’s a trip within Mercosur, Brazilians board with an original RG in good condition (or the new ID card) or a valid passport; a driver’s license, work ID and copies don’t count for entering Argentina and Uruguay. Minors need their own document and, if traveling without both parents, a notarized authorization. Brazil’s Foreign Ministry lists the documents accepted in each country on the consular portal, and Argentina’s National Directorate of Migrations has the country’s entry rules (checked Oct/2026). A very old RG, with a photo that doesn’t allow identifying the holder or laminated with a tear, may be refused at boarding, so anyone with a document in that condition should get a new one or travel with a passport. The name on the ticket must match the document. The full list is in the guide to cruise documents.

Tip: the ship’s medical center is paid separately and public healthcare doesn’t work on board or in Buenos Aires or Montevideo; insurance with medical and cancellation coverage covers the whole week; get a travel insurance quote.

Is the Rio de la Plata cruise worth it?

It’s worth it for anyone who wants to see Buenos Aires and a Uruguayan city in one week, with no flights and no changing hotels, paying in reais and in installments. It’s not worth it for those who want warm-water beaches (the stops are urban and the southern sea is cold), for those who get seasick (it’s 4 days at sea, sometimes with rough water near the Rio de la Plata) or for those who want many hours on land: 8 to 10 hours per city is enough for an outing, not for really getting to know it.

Seaview or Diadema? Choose Costa Diadema if you prefer Montevideo and 10 hours in Buenos Aires; Seaview if you want Punta del Este and the lowest price in December. For other options leaving from Brazil, see the December cruises and the January cruises.

What nobody tells you

The per-night service charge goes on your onboard account and is a shock on the last day if you didn’t plan for it. Internet on board is paid, and a Brazilian SIM card charges roaming in Argentina and Uruguay. Tender disembarkation in Punta del Este can be canceled if the sea is rough, and then the ship sails straight on. On the way back to Santos, disembarkation starts at 8am and leaving the terminal takes hours: don’t book an early flight that day. For more coastal departures, Logitravel’s selection of Brazilian cruises lists every week of the season.

Conclusion

To pay less, the 12/13 Seaview departure is the best buy; for more time in Buenos Aires and Montevideo, the Diadema in February or March. Book your cabin early if you want a balcony, and have your RG or passport in good condition ready.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cancellation and refund policy?

It depends on the fare and how far in advance you cancel: in general, the closer to departure, the higher the penalty, and promotional fares may be non-refundable. The rules for each departure appear at Logitravel booking; confirm before paying.

Are there restrictions for children, seniors or pregnant travelers?

There’s no age limit for seniors. MSC and Costa don’t accept pregnant travelers from the 24th completed week at the end of the trip and require a minimum age for babies; confirm on the cruise line’s website.

Do you need a passport for an Argentina-Uruguay cruise?

No. Brazilians can board with just an original RG in good condition; a valid passport also works. A driver’s license doesn’t count.

Can you go ashore in Buenos Aires on your own?

Yes. Go ashore with your document and card, use a taxi or rideshare, and be back on the ship at least an hour before departure, which on Seaview is at 4pm and on Diadema at 6pm.
