Why “de Pedra”? The history and architecture
The neo-Gothic silhouette, the dark basalt and the 65-meter tower make the church look medieval — but it’s newer than it appears. The Paróquia Nossa Senhora de Lourdes was founded on December 30, 1937, and construction of the current temple only began in 1953, with a design attributed to Bernardo Sartori and a strong push from canon João Marchesi.
A great fun fact to share on your trip: the stone walls were built around the old church, which kept holding services underneath while the new temple rose.
