What is the difference between the Cathedral’s lighting and the Light Show?
The nighttime lighting keeps the façade lit and colorful; the Light Show is a performance with a beginning and an end, a soundtrack, a narrative and projections mapped onto the architecture. This difference avoids the most common frustration among tourists: arriving at the square, finding the church lit up and believing that static light is the whole show.
In the show, the Cathedral works as a giant screen. Images and colors follow the arches, tower, windows and stone reliefs, while sound and story guide the performance. Architectural lighting, on the other hand, enhances the church at night, but it has no script and no session at a set time.

It is confirmed that the new show, Luminata, premiered on September 28, 2026, with daily performances at 8 p.m., according to Portal da Folha (September 28, 2026). Before that, a technical rehearsal had been posted on September 15, 2026 on the verified profile of Canela’s mayor, Gilberto Cezar. In the caption, he describes an experience that brings together technology, emotion, history and the Cathedral as a symbol of the city.
According to the premiere report, the show uses more than 100 reflectors controlled by a professional lighting console and was created by Ilumina Espetáculos, with institutional support from Canela’s Department of Tourism and Culture. On the official Luminata Instagram profile, the organizers confirmed on September 28 and 29, 2026 the name of the show and the rules for watching it: a duration of about 6 minutes, free admission with no ticket, the audience in the outdoor area in front of the Cathedral, and an experience for all ages. In 2020, the show “Vida” brought together narration, visual arts, music and projections on the stone.
In 2024, the Luminata project presented themed seasons. At Easter, “Via Domini – Os Caminhos do Senhor” told the story of the Way of the Cross; between August and October, “Recomeço” featured a text about the rebuilding of Rio Grande do Sul and narration by Pedro Bial. Those names, times and scripts belong to 2024 and serve only to explain the tradition — they are not the 2026 program.
In May 2025, Portal da Folha reported that the projections had been suspended indefinitely because of a legal and administrative dispute involving the projection structure installed in a public area. At the end of that year, the show returned on special dates of the Sonho de Natal. “Contos da Catedral: O Segredo do Velho Noel” mixed projections, theater and Santa Claus rappelling down; the city government reported an audience of roughly 20,000 people at the premiere.
This history helps explain the importance of the September 2026 premiere: after the 2025 suspension, the show came back with daily performances, not just on special dates.
Is the show part of Sonho de Natal 2026?
The relationship with the 39th Sonho de Natal has not yet been officially detailed. Canela’s tourism page confirms the 2026 edition but still lists the program as “Coming soon.” Therefore, it is not yet possible to say whether the daily show that premiered in September will have a special script during Christmas.

The best spot is usually the Praça da Matriz, in front of the façade, with a central view and without blocking entrances or reserved areas. With the daily show at 8 p.m., arrive 30 to 45 minutes early for the first performances and on weekends. The area is public but can get crowded on event nights.
- Check on the same day: rain, religious services and technical adjustments can change a performance.
- Don’t rely only on Google Maps: the church may be lit up even when there is no show.
- Bring a jacket: the temperature drops quickly at night in the Serra Gaúcha.
- Go on foot if you are downtown: nearby parking spots are hard to find and there may be temporary road closures.
