Cruise Service Fees in 2026: How Much Is It and Can You Skip It?

🇧🇷 POR | 🇺🇸 EN | 🇪🇸 ES

The cruise service fee in 2026 is mandatory under the Brazilian rules of MSC and Costa. MSC publishes R$ 99 per person/night in a regular cabin in South America, for guests aged 12 and up, and includes the hotel service charge in the final price of new bookings. At Costa, the daily rate is still to be confirmed in the quote. The official check was done on 10/11/2026.

Called a “tip” in many conversations, this charge has its own contractual rules. Before asking whether you can remove it, check the country where the booking was made, the cabin category, and whether the item has already been paid. A duplicate charge and a correctly included mandatory fee require different approaches.

How much is the MSC and Costa service fee in 2026?

Under MSC’s current Brazilian table, the hotel service charge in South America costs R$ 99 per person/night in a regular cabin or R$ 121 in Yacht Club, for guests aged 12 and up (Oct/2026). At Costa Brazil, no public daily rate was confirmed that applies to all departures.

MSC Brazil’s Terms and Conditions present the table in clause 2.10.1, with reference from 07/02/2026. The Brazilian hotel service page states that the final price of new bookings already includes the fee. Don’t add again an item that the confirmation already covers.

Costa — Brazilian marketDaily rate to be confirmed (Oct/2026)Mandatory hotel service is part of the total price

The official MSC United States table distinguishes the booking date. The US$ 17 doesn’t automatically apply to every sailing after 05/11/2026. For a purchase in Brazil, use the Brazilian contract; don’t convert the dollar from the American table to replace the fee contracted in reais.

As an arithmetic example, seven nights at R$ 99 come to R$ 693 per guest aged 12 and up; two guests total R$ 1,386 (official basis consulted in Oct/2026). That’s the hotel service component, not an additional charge that’s necessarily still pending. To build out the rest, see how much a cruise costs with fees and extras.

Ask the seller for three things in the same message: the final price for all passengers, the list of items already included, and the balance to be paid on board. Keep the reply together with the quote. A quote that separates these parts lets you compare trips of different lengths without confusing the cruise fare with the total budget.

Do children also pay the service fee?

At MSC, children under 2 on the departure date don’t pay the hotel service charge. For other ages, the answer depends on the market and itinerary; the Brazilian child rate for ages 2 to 11 was still to be confirmed at the 10/11/2026 check.

The Costa FAQ mentions service fees among children’s expenses in the Famílias Especiais offer. So a promotion with a free cruise fare for kids doesn’t prove that all fees were waived.

Give the birth dates when requesting the quote, including for babies. Avoid splitting the cabin total equally before you know each passenger’s rule. If a birthday falls between the purchase and the departure, ask the seller to confirm the age used in the calculation. The receipt needs to show the group’s real composition, not just the advertised adult fare.

Can you remove the service fee or dispute the charge?

There’s no general authorization to remove the hotel service charge from a Brazilian booking: MSC Brazil and Costa Brazil treat it as mandatory. MSC USA, meanwhile, describes a removal request procedure in cases of unsatisfactory service, directly with the guest relations manager on board.

That procedure is in the American FAQ cited above. It’s not a shortcut to stop paying a Brazilian contract. At Costa, clause 4.5 of the Brazilian contract distinguishes the hotel service charge from tips and establishes that it’s mandatory. Any solution for a specific problem depends on how the complaint is handled, with no automatic promise of a refund.

To dispute a charge, present the purchase confirmation and the ship’s bill. Identify exactly what the problem is: a charge already prepaid, a mismatched number of nights, a passenger charged twice, or a category that doesn’t match the booking. It’s more useful to ask for a review of a specific line than to request the removal of “all tips” without checking the items.

  1. Compare name, currency, age, and number of nights on the booking and the bill.
  2. Set aside payment receipts and the breakdown of included fees.
  3. Go to reception or guest services while you’re still on board.
  4. Describe what happened and ask for a record of the service and a written reply.
  5. Check the final invoice and keep the documents after disembarking.

If the complaint is about the service, describe what happened, where, and when. Give the team a chance to fix the problem during the trip. For those looking to save, choosing a clear quote is usually more useful than booking while counting on a future removal of a contractual charge. The expected discount may not exist.

Is the hotel service charge the same as the bar fee?

The hotel service charge and the consumption service fee are different charges. The first is tied to the general hospitality services; the second may accompany a purchase at the bar, the spa, or another optional service, depending on the cruise line and route.

MSC bar, North America18% on individual purchases (Oct/2026)Don’t apply the Brazilian percentage

The MSC onboard information FAQ publishes the percentages by region. The MSC packages page states that the service fee is included in the drinks package. Compare the options in the MSC drinks package guide and, for the other cruise line, in the Costa drinks package guide.

Set a limit for individual spending before boarding and check the bill during the trip. The consumption list helps you track down a purchase you don’t recognize without mixing up the hotel service charge with drinks. When splitting expenses among friends, agree on who’s responsible for each item and keep the receipts; informally splitting the cabin doesn’t, on its own, explain an individual charge.

Does the cabin category change the service fee?

Yes: MSC publishes a higher amount for Yacht Club than for regular cabins in the markets compared here. An upgrade can also raise the fee, even when the hotel service charge was already paid earlier.

The official MSC Upgrade rule provides for charging the difference when the new category has a higher hotel service charge. Before placing a bid, ask which components change. Compare the full cost of the upgrade, including the parts that will be settled later.

An interior cabin can make sense for those prioritizing budget; a balcony appeals to those who want private outdoor space. Neither choice replaces checking the contract. When you compare Brazilian cruises on Logitravel, keep the same passengers and the same duration to evaluate the final price of each cabin, instead of comparing only individual parts.

Is transportation to the port included in this fee?

Transportation to the port isn’t a ship hotel service. Costa lists an optional transfer separately, including an outsourced option from São Paulo to Santos; check what’s included in your purchase.

The guidance is in Costa’s Useful Information. If you book transportation, also save the time, meeting point, and contact of the company responsible. The transfer price should appear as its own budget line, without being confused with the per-night fee.

For those boarding in Santos who arrive early, a tour can fill the free time. Choose it only after setting your check-in time at the terminal: the priority is making check-in. Add parking, travel, and any overnight stay to your trip comparison, since these costs can change the advantage of a seemingly cheaper departure.

Which documents should you keep to check the bill?

Keep the booking confirmation, the contract, payment receipts, and consumption receipts. These documents let you check a prepaid fee and show guest services which line needs review.

Make a folder on your phone with the files and keep a copy accessible without internet. Identify the currency of each payment and the person responsible for each expense. If the booking was changed, keep both the previous and the new confirmation, because the difference may be in the category, the duration, or the cabin composition.

Boarding documentation is another check: follow the cruise line’s list for the route and the applicable authorizations for minors. Don’t leave this step for the last night. For seniors, pregnant travelers, or passengers who need assistance, confirm the travel conditions before booking; sorting out the fee doesn’t, by itself, guarantee eligibility to board.

Medical care and medications on board are extra expenses, according to Costa’s Useful Information. That charge doesn’t become free just because the hotel service charge was paid. Set aside part of your planning for assistance and check the limits, exclusions, and validity while sailing in the policy.

Tip: The onboard medical center can generate expenses. Check cruise coverage, limits, and conditions before booking. Get a travel insurance quote.

If I cancel the cruise, do I get the fee back?

The refund depends on the booking conditions and the cancellation situation. Don’t treat the hotel service charge as an always-recoverable part: ask for a calculation breakdown that separates the fare, fees, extras, and refunded amounts.

The Costa contract provides specific treatment for one guest in a double cabin backing out, with a refund of the hotel service charge in that case and a change in cost for whoever stays. That doesn’t establish a full refund for any cancellation. Check the clause that applies to your case and get the simulation before formally canceling.

When requesting the calculation, state whether the whole cabin will be canceled, whether only one passenger will back out, or whether the intent is to change the trip. Ask for the deadline and method of refund, the beneficiary’s identification, and a breakdown of each retention. Keep the reply together with the request; a total amount with no explanation makes it hard to check the result.

To close the purchase, use two lists: what’s already been paid and what can still be charged. If the quote doesn’t make clear where the hotel service charge is, ask for clarification before paying. Choose the departure whose total fits your budget and board with the documents you need to recognize each charge.

Frequently asked questions

Does MSC charge the hotel service fee even for those who don’t use the main restaurant?

The Brazilian hotel service fee is part of the booking price and isn’t presented as payment for a specific meal. Using only the buffet doesn’t prove an exemption.

Does the US$ 17 American daily rate apply to any MSC booking?

No. The American MSC table ties US$ 17 per night in a regular cabin to bookings from 05/11/2026 for the Caribbean, Alaska, and USA. The contract of the market where you bought must be checked.

Does the free-kids promotion eliminate all fees?

Don’t assume so. At MSC there’s an exemption from the hotel service charge for children under 2; other ages and promotions require checking the booking composition. Costa mentions child fees in family offers.

Can I pay a tip in cash instead of the fee?

An individual gratuity doesn’t automatically replace the contracted hotel service charge. Costa Brazil states that it doesn’t operate a tipping system and prohibits extra compensation to crew members.

How do I know if the fee was charged twice?

Compare the breakdown of the price paid on the booking with the charge on the onboard bill. Present receipts to guest services and ask for a review of the line that appears duplicated.

Official sources checked on 10/11/2026: MSC Brazil (terms, hotel service, onboard information, drinks, and upgrade), MSC USA (hotel service), and Costa Brazil (contract, Useful Information, and FAQ). Unconfirmed child amounts and Costa daily rate: to be confirmed at booking.
