Formal night on a cruise: what to wear each night

🇧🇷 POR | 🇺🇸 EN | 🇪🇸 ES

Formal night on a cruise is the dinner where the line asks for dressier clothing: a suit or a party dress. On Royal Caribbean, cruises of 6 to 10 nights have 2 formal nights and 5-night sailings have 1 (rule checked in Oct 2026). On Costa, the vibe is casual and the “elegant night” is just a suggestion to dress a little nicer.

What is formal night on a cruise?

Formal night is a dinner where the line suggests formal attire in the main dining room: a suit with tie, a tuxedo, a party dress or a gown, per Royal Caribbean’s definition (Oct 2026). It’s the night for photos with the captain, for the backdrops set up by the photographers and for the most elaborate menu.

It’s not a separate party and it doesn’t cost extra. It’s the same dinner included in your fare, just with a suggestion to dress more elegantly. The cruise food guide explains what’s included in the main dining room and at the buffet.

The daily program delivered to your cabin (or in the line’s app) tells you which night the gala falls on. Usually it’s not the first night, because checked bags are still being delivered to the cabins.

Does every cruise have a formal night?

No. On Royal Caribbean, the official rule (Oct 2026) is 1 formal night on 5-night cruises, 2 on 6- to 10-night cruises, 3 on 11- to 14-night cruises and 3 to 4 on sailings over 15 nights, always “at the ship’s discretion” and subject to change with the itinerary.

The idea that only cruises of 6 nights or more have a gala isn’t confirmed by Royal’s rule, which already provides for one night on 5-night trips. For mini-cruises of 2 to 4 nights, common along the Brazilian coast, none of the lines publishes an official rule: the elegant night may or may not exist, and the ship decides. On MSC, the rule is also “to be confirmed,” because the official dress code page couldn’t be accessed during this check.

What to wear on cruise formal night?

For formal night, men wear a suit with tie or a tuxedo, and women wear a party dress, gown or dressy set, according to Royal Caribbean’s “gala (black tie)” code (Oct 2026). In practice, a dark suit without a tie or dress pants with a blazer is also accepted by most Brazilian passengers.

Nobody needs to buy a tuxedo. A dress you’d already wear to a wedding or graduation, or a suit you use for work, will do for the night. Closed-toe shoes or heeled sandals complete the look; flip-flops don’t belong in the dining room.

On theme nights, the best known is white night, common on MSC ships along the Brazilian coast: bring one white piece and reuse it in everyday life. The full day-by-day clothing list is in the cruise packing checklist.

What’s the dress code for each night on board?

Most nights are casual or smart casual; the gala takes up only one or two nights of the trip. On Royal Caribbean (Oct 2026), casual allows jeans, polos, dresses and blouses, and smart casual calls for a collared shirt, dress, skirt or set, with a blazer welcome.

Costa sums up the spirit in its official FAQ: “the vibe is informal and casual,” with “dressier clothing for elegant night” and more comfortable clothes during the day and on shore excursions. The line also recommends bringing a jacket or shawl, because the air conditioning in the lounges is strong.

During the day, swimwear stays in the pool area. To walk around the ship, a beach cover-up or a T-shirt over it does the trick, and the same rule applies to the casino.

What’s mandatory and what’s just a suggestion?

Formal attire is a suggestion; what’s mandatory are a few rules of conduct. On Royal Caribbean (Oct 2026), you don’t walk barefoot anywhere on the ship, tank tops aren’t allowed at dinner in the main dining room or the specialty restaurants, and in the casino a shirt and shoes are always required.

Anyone who doesn’t want to dress up on formal night won’t go hungry: the buffet runs with casual attire. Some specialty restaurants, like Royal’s Chef’s Table, keep their own formal dress code; see how they work in the guide to cruise specialty restaurants.

Off the ship, Royal reminds guests that camouflage or military-style clothing is banned by law on islands such as Jamaica, Barbados and Saint Lucia, and that churches may require modest clothing.

How to pack formal wear in a smaller suitcase?

The secret is a single formal outfit that pairs with pieces from the rest of the trip: a blazer that goes with your smart casual pants, or a dress that works for the gala and, with flat sandals, for casual night. That way your suitcase doesn’t gain volume for just one night.

Pack your formal wear in the checked bag folded with tissue paper or in a garment bag, and keep the first night’s clothes in your carry-on. On MSC, checked bags only reach the cabin between late afternoon and early evening on embarkation day; weight and size limits are in the cruise luggage guide.

Irons are a no-go: they’re among the items in the guide to what’s prohibited on a cruise. To get out wrinkles, use the on-board pressing service or hang the piece in the bathroom during a hot shower.

Tip: Costa doesn’t allow appliances on board and notes that luggage and the ship’s medical care are charged separately. Travel insurance with baggage coverage also protects your formal wear all the way to the port: get a travel insurance quote.

Is there laundry on the ship?

Yes. On Costa, every ship has express laundry, dry cleaning and pressing service, for a fee, with a bag and price list in the cabin (official FAQ, Oct 2026). Perla Diamante members of the loyalty program get free laundry.

Costa also sells the “Magic Bag” package through MyCosta, designed for the last days of the trip. Anyone spending more than a week on board can pack less and do laundry mid-trip.

Prices for each service aren’t published on the website: check the cabin’s price list before sending your formal wear to be pressed.

Frequently asked questions

Does every cruise have a formal night?

No. On Royal Caribbean, 5-night cruises have 1 formal night and 6- to 10-night cruises have 2 (Oct 2026). On mini-cruises of up to 4 nights there’s no official published rule: confirm with the line.

Is formal attire mandatory on a cruise?

No. Formal attire is a suggestion; anyone who doesn’t want to dress up can have dinner at the buffet. What’s mandatory is wearing footwear throughout the ship and not wearing tank tops to dinner.

Can you wear shorts to dinner on a cruise?

On Royal Caribbean, shorts are allowed only at breakfast and lunch (Oct 2026). For dinner in the main dining room, wear pants or a dress.

Is there an iron in the cabin?

No, and irons can’t be brought on board. Costa offers paid pressing and laundry service on board (Oct 2026).
