When is Cologne and Düsseldorf Carnival 2027?

Cologne’s street Carnival kicks off on Thursday, 4 February 2027, and runs through Tuesday, 9/02. The KölnTourismus calendar confirms Rosenmontag on 8/02 and Ash Wednesday on 10/02. The cultural season starts earlier, on 11/11/2026; that doesn’t mean months of nonstop parades.

Düsseldorf also wraps up its season on 10/02, according to the official tourism board, and already has a grandstand announced for the 8/02 parade. What is Carnival in Germany like?

In Cologne and Düsseldorf, costumes, processions and bar parties are all part of Carnival. Rosenmontag is the main Monday parade, with floats and organized groups; it’s not a Brazilian street block where you just join in behind a trio elétrico. In Cologne, the greeting is “Alaaf”; in Düsseldorf, it’s “Helau”.

The opening Thursday, called Weiberfastnacht, takes over streets and squares from early on. The weekend brings more processions, and Tuesday closes out the cycle. Cologne has the tradition of burning the Nubbel, a straw figure tied to the farewell to the party. Specific 2027 routes and times need to be checked before you pick your viewing spot.

Altstadt-Nord lets you prioritize Cologne without depending on a train after the parade. Check the 2027 route and the noise on your hotel’s street: a central location guarantees neither quiet nor clear passage through road closures.
